Well, the ante has been well and truly upped. Good luck my friends, we've all seen the films and read the books.

Well, the ante has been well and truly upped. Good luck my friends, we've all seen the films and read the books. I still feel oddly unprepared. Me too. Hunkered down in the Scottish Highlands with nothing but a stack of books, a wood-burning stove, a cellar full of haggis & porridge and a selection of the finest malt whiskies. Hard times...

Up to now, it is London that is being most affected, which mirrors how that city got the worst of it in so many 80s horror novels.

We have this closed shops and restaurants for a about a week now. It is creepy and depressing. Not to mention the worry how many will be able to open someday again. Captain Trips, huh?

Just about everything is closing down around here. Last I checked, there were 97 cases of Coronavirus here in North Carolina. No deaths yet, thank goodness.

All stores except groceries, pharmacies & banks ordered closed in my city this morning, thanks to seniors returning from Florida & not self-isolating. 4 cases so far. A slight chance they may quarantine us, but not likely. Just read about the UK "going into lockdown". Things are getting nightmarish fast

Depressing. I tend to panic when I slip out on a forage to the grocery, to stock up; early in the morning, to avoid the running and bustling crowd. But they get there quickly, before I reach the checkout. Then I'm like a trapped animal. Tomorrow is probably the final day I dare go out shop, one last time. Plan to call for home delivery instead (at present one week's waiting list). If there will be any stock left at all in a few weeks.
At home in my ivory tower I try to go on as usual, enjoying what I do. I am pretty good at shutting out the world to focus on more "important" things, but to my annoyance this miserable distraction is growing, and with worry for my elders. Reality is creeping closer. In a time like this I regret not having been a self-sufficient trained survivalist.
Stay safe. And please share your advice if you have any.

Stay safe. And please share your advice if you have any. - 1 - Loneliness is worse than the virus. Stay in touch with folk you value (the internet is your friend here). - 2 - Avoid alcohol. It depresses the immune system and is a depressant (See 1, above). - 3 - We might not leave this by the same door we came in, but we will leave this. Hang in there.

Things are getting nightmarish fast You'll get used to it pretty soon, I hope. We've been dealing with it here (in Hong Kong) for almost two months. During the first two or three weeks people did hole up voluntarily, but after that life has returned to normal. Not normal normal of course. But kind of. The propaganda machine of the PRC government, which is probably more deadly than any virus, has also been running in full gear for the last few weeks. That's a real monster.

Thanks for that excellent advice, Dr Shrink Proof. I agree wholeheartedly.
This morning, I've done a bit of cooking, started reading Lady Gregory's Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland, and while waiting for the toast to finish, danced around my kitchen to Marlene Dietrich singing "Hot Voodoo" (definitely not correct for 2020, but such is life here).
Thanks Humgoo for the insights and encouragement. My thoughts are with you and everyone in Hong Kong.

Thanks for your kind words, Steve. And yes, at the risk of stating the obvious: now's as good a time as any to reduce the height of your to-read pile! They've been sitting there for ages waiting to be used! Yes, you bought that book 20 years ago! (And that, and that ...) No more excuses!
And please share story notes and cover scans while you're at it! While Dem is apparently taking a rest, you can become the new king of story notes! (I freely confess that I often find it more interesting, and rewarding, to read Vault story notes than to read the stories themselves.)
