I was flicking through a copy of Vive Le Rock magazine in W H Smiths over Christmas (it had The Ramones on the cover) and was surprised and a little saddened to see an obituary for Phil ‘Philthy Animal’ Taylor, the original drummer of Motorhead. ‘Phoned my brother that evening and we discussed happy days of gig-going, the value of a band you liked appearing on Top Of The Pops, Hawkwind etc. It was a punch in the gut to see Lemmy, someone who genuinely seemed indestructible, had succumbed, and if that wasn’t enough, this morning another 60s chancer who farted around in various loser bands until the 1970s gave him a chance at fame and success. Bowie, like so many authors, musicians, actors and directors, had ‘always been there’. His first real impact on me personally was via the ’75 rerelease and charting of Space Oddity, accompanied by that odd little film depicting Major Tom in space. Very happy memories of watching this with my grandmother several times – she thought the artist was ‘Major Tom’. Subsequently picked up Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World on LP (with the amended covers – wouldn’t get the originals until CD) and Aladdin Sane, which quickly became my favourite, indeed has stayed as a top ten fave album ever since. Didn’t get a first release DB album until ‘heroes’ (along with Iggy’s The Idiot). Ever since then he’d been a presence in life. I was fortunate enough to see him twice – and he remains the only person that has sent an electric thrill down my spine due to the realisation that I was actually seeing ‘him’ – for real – even if he was a matchstick figure descending from high above the stage at Wembley Stadium on a chair, and it was only his grinning face on a large screen that provoked that reaction. This was, of course, the jeered Glass Spider tour (I only went because my boss’s son had two tickets and decided he didn’t want go – providence!). The only oldie was Time and it was all of the Let’s Dance stuff that went down well. The second time was the Reality tour (Wembley Arena) – a modern album with the greatest hits sandwiched in between. The wife wasn’t over impressed but I couldn’t believe my luck – again. Particularly dewy-eyed this morn as I’d watched the Ziggy doc on i-Player over the weekend, and was eagerly waiting for the credit card to roll over next week so I could afford to buy Blackstar. It was late last year I finally obtained Love You Till Tuesday with the Space Oddity fillum (thanks DD) and got to see The Image. Life-spanning, life changing, life affirming (although 1.Outside is a bit difficult). The great leveller is approaching for all. Still time to go down singing and dancing.

1.OUTSIDE is one of my favourite Bowie records. It's bloated, sure, but there's some great tracks on there, and weird undercurrent of perversion through the whole thing that makes it feel like a David Lynch film in album form.

I just about remember Bowie's original release of Space Oddity and better his appearances on TV in the early to mid 1970s. Even at such a young age I was somehow aware that he stood out from most of his contemporaries, though I couldn't have expressed why. I didn't follow his career that closely over the decades, but his appearances on TOTP were always not to be missed and I purchased several of his collections. Looking back through his discography I was surprised at just how many of his songs I really like and still remember, even after 40+ years. Bowie was the kind of guy you think will live forever, and when someone like him passes away it comes as a great shock. I think that we sometimes bandy the terms 'legend' and 'superstar' around a bit too freely, but in the case of David Bowie those words are perfect descriptions. RIP.
