I have just started to watch this [yes, I know, slightly late to the party], and it's a deliciously dark show. Idris Elba is absolutely superb in the title role, and you cannot take your eyes off him. A seething mass of contradictions makes John Luther a fascinating character. The supporting cast is quite superb, with Ruth Wilson's character Alice Morgan being a definite high point. Luther's various adversaries are, on the whole, totally chilling, with the utterly loathsome Lucien Burgess, played by the always superb Paul Rhys [who, alongside David Collings, I always thought would have been a great choice for the role of The Doctor in Doctor Who], winning the prize for the nastiest. He plays Burgess so well, that you find yourself wanting something dreadful to happen to the character. I'm glad that there is a good chance of the BBC producing another season. Interestingly, the show is constructed rather like another favourite detective show of mine: Columbo, in which the viewer is shown 'who' right from the start, and has to see how that 'who' is finally brought to justice [or worse]. I'm working through the box set, and enjoying every moment. I have to admit, that I did not like 'The Wire' at all , but I could see how good Idris Elba was in it. Here, he's quite astonishing.

Latest word from the BBC: They are in the process of making two 'Luther' specials to be shown later this year. There have also been mutterings about creating a spin-off show featuring John Luther's 'favourite enemy', Alice. I'd definitely watch it.
