Hello everybody - new to the board this morning . My name is Olliebeak and I'm a 'woman of a certain age ..................' - I've loved 'suspense stories' since childhood when I discovered an 'Anthology Collection' in my grandparents house and read them avidly. That is the book that I want to pick at your 'little grey cells' about, so will be putting a query on the appropriate thread. Thanks for letting me join .

I think we're all closet shelf voyeurs, to be honest. I noticed you had HV Morton's 'Ghosts Of London', which has nothing to do with supernatural ghosts but a lot to do with the remnants of the past left in any city, and goes rather well as a companion to his three pre-WW2 '... Of London' books. I think you'll like it here.

I like that it is a personal account. olliebeak - Any author/s in particular you enjoy the most?

Thanks to everybody for your 'welcome messages' - and welcome to you too, noirist . I'm not sure that I've got any proper 'favourite suspense authors' - don't think I've read enough different ones to have formed full opinions yet . I DO quite like Edgar Allen Poe but there's others as well. I'm also a bit partial to some Agatha Christie - though that's very tame reading material, but at least she doesn't give me nightmares like some others can do . I prefer 'short stories' - for me, it's mostly about reading a full story before dropping off ...................... anything longer than that, and I lose my place by before the end. I've been spending the last few days getting re-acquainted with the stories in the book that I've mentioned in my posts - can't believe that I've finally managed to get this book back into my collection after years of searching for it . Many thanks to demonik for confirming that it WAS the one I've been searching for ! There IS a TV Sci-Fi programme that I'm hoping to identify - I'll post what I remember of it in another post, see if anybody can help with that one as well .

I love Agatha Christie too! Even though she didn't write horrors, I found that some her stories give me very eerie vibes. One is Nemesis, in which one of the characters/sisters called Clothilde (no idea if I spelled that correctly) is really weird. The way her hair etc is described I image an adult Baby Jane haha. The other was a short story in antholgy of hers (possibly The Thirteen Problems) in which a young woman is compelled to walk either a trance state, or sleepwalking, to a spot in some woods. That story also just gave me a very weird atmosphere... I'm not very good at explaining myself (could you notice? lol) but perhaps you have read those and understand what I mean?

I'm a fan of Christie - I read them without too much interest back in the 70's but lately I have been revisiting and they are impressively written. Love the old fontana covers too.

Christie did write the odd weird/supernatural short story - "The Hound of Death" is probably the best known.

@dr Strange I wasn't aware. I will have to find the stories now. Thank you!
@demonik Wow, I wish even half of my Agatha Christie collection had the artwork by Tom Adams!
