A real hero for our times, and someone who faced REAL Evil and Horror on a daily basis, and came out on top in the end. Evil is real, and the monsters that perpetrate it are men. There may be mutterings that some things the ANC. did in the past were questionable, but the South African Apartheid regime was totally inexcusable - the doctrine of 'Dislike of the Unlike' has NO place in a civilised society. Nelson Mandela was one of the very few people in history to whom the epithet 'World Changing' actually applies. In his time, he made the lives of millions of people better. He actually made the world a better place, and was universally loved. I'm not a political animal by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm sad he's gone.
God Bless you sir.

This is very sad news to wake up to. I'd not switched on the box so your post was the very first place I learned of his passing. At 95, and having been in dreadful health, the great man deserves some peace, but what a loss to humanity. Of all the tributes from world leaders, I think President Obama's is the one. "Mandela achieved more than could be expected of any man." For once, even Sepp Blatter hasn't made a pigs ear of it: "He was probably one of the greatest humanists of our time .... When he was honoured and cheered by the crowd at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium on 11 July 2010, it was as a man of the people, a man of their hearts. It was one of the most moving moments I have ever experienced." RIP Nelson Mandela.

Struth - I was just thinking about him a couple of days ago, wondering if he was still around! I always feel a bit of a Grim Reaper when that happens..... Mark
