Donald Wandrei - The Web of Easter Island (Arkham House, 1948; Consul, 1961) Just arrived in the mail today. I'm hoping that Lovecraftian horror and the mysteries of Easter Island are a winning combination. The cover is not credited.

Wandrei's The Web of Easter Island turned out to be a strange one. It's essentially his take on "The Call of Cthulhu," with a bit of The House on the Borderland and some other weirdness thrown into the mix. Parts of it are entertaining, but it would be better off without the last two chapters (one is a dream sequence; the other is just awful). Another chapter that focuses on two side characters reads as though it were added after the fact to include some sexy parts. Given the popularity of Lovecraft knockoffs, I'm surprised that the book hasn't been reprinted in ages (though Centipede Press did recently publish an early draft under a different title--I'd be interested to see how that version differs). Perhaps it's been overlooked because Wandrei doesn't name-drop The Necronomicon or any of the Great Old Ones.
