Of recent years, every issue of Paperback Fanatic has been a riot of colour, so imagine a two volume special devoted entirely to the work of one visionary paperback artist? Yes, the long awaited Bruce Pennington : Portrait Of A Master Fantasy Artist is with us at last, and a beautiful job Mr. Marriott has made of it, too. In Volume 1 (64 pages) the glorious gallery is offset with written content - introduction, career overview-cum-interview and that all-important checklist - while the companion volume, bar a title page and publication details, is 74 uninterrupted pages of full colour reproductions, including examples of Pennington's Cthulhu Mythos work for Panther, his gorgeous cover paintings for NEL's Edgar Rice Burroughs reissues, the Corgi Ray Bradbury's, and the originals of the pair cheekily incorporated into our banner. Bruce supplies the low down on The Eschatus Story, a particularly traumatic project suggested by Roger Dean which, taken on at a time of acute nervous disorder, came very close to destroying him as a human, being let alone an artist until Bill Grundy - aided and abetted by the Sex Pistols - delivered him from his black hole one legendary December evening in 1976. Justin writes in his introduction: "I hope this modest publication helps to introduce a new generation to his work, as well as providing a few surprises for event the most ardent collector of his art." I'd say there's a strong possibility.

This is so great. Justin should do artbooks at a big publishing house! I was surprised about Mr Penningtons contribution. That was very in-depths and personal.
Some of the covers are breathtaking, especially the later ones. The Gene Wolfe novels? Peak of the craft.

This is so great. Justin should do artbooks at a big publishing house! Now that would be perfect! Seeing the covers one after the other really brings home what a talent the man is. The artwork could easily have carried the two volumes, but i'm glad Justin went with the biography/ interview and checklist as they provide the finishing touch.
