Just joined after reading the forums off and on for the last few months.
My name is Peter and I live in Canada.
Found the site after searching for Fontana GGS info. Lots of great info & discussions here!
That's it for now I think, but I would like to add that I believe the cover artist for the early Fontana GGS volumes was Alan Lee. Same artist that worked on the LOTR movies.
Cheers!
Pete

Hi Peter. Thanks for the Alan Lee info - the question as to who illustrated the 'seventies Fontana Ghost covers is one that's haunted me for years and i'm sure you're right! a quick google reveals that Randy Broecker - who has met him - came to the same conclusion in his essay on Jack Williamson's Darker Than You Think in Stephen Jones & Kim Newman's Horror: Another Hundred Best Books. Different strokes and all that, but if Lee is our man then i far prefer his ghosts to his Tolkein illustrations.

Hi Demonik,
I forget now how I found that out but it also used to drive me nuts for years. The not knowing who painted them..
Great covers - my faves being the ones for FGGS #6, 7 & 8.

i could never understand what most of the major paperback imprints of the day went to such lengths to present their books so attractively but stopped short at crediting the artists! Fontana used Gordon Crabbe, Justin Todd and John Holmes for some of their other 'seventies classics, but - to the best of my knowledge - we've yet to identify who was responsible for the series of paintings used for Hugh Lamb's A Wave Of Fear, Victorian Tales Of Terror, Terror by Gaslight, The Taste of Fear & Co. for Coronet. Any ideas?

if that really is the case (and i don't doubt it) than Tolkein and his infernal Hobbits' gain was most definitely our loss.

I really like all of Lee's work, but it would be nice to see him do more ghost story or related art.
His cover for the Gormenghast trilogy is a thing of beauty imo - truly amazing.
But then, Gormenghast is an acquired taste for many i've found...
ah well..
