For anyone who's interested I shall be talking about HP Lovecraft in Film at this event next weekend: aklo.blogspot.com/2010/11/weird-winter-tales-day-festival-in.htmlI'm going to be reading some of my story The Iconostasis of Imperfections from Wicked Delights, and if nothing else it may be the only chance to hear what I think of Die Monster Die!

Aklo! You're certainly moving in exclusive circles these days, Lord P.
And what to make of ...
"Gwilym Games, Editor of Machenalia, the newsletter of the Friends of Arthur Machen, will be presenting a talk ... He will also report on the Samuels-Games Devonian 2010 expedition. He is one of the few relatively sane survivors of this expedition which made terrifying discoveries when exploring the origins of Lovecraft’s paternal ancestry in Devon."

Aklo! You're certainly moving in exclusive circles these days, Lord P. Must confess I'm a bit of an ignoramus as regards Aklo, Mr D! But if you say so...

Wasn't Aklo the language invented by Mr Machen? If I'm right, I hope Mark Samuels is proud of me...

There are some details about their early publications as you read down the short Dementia 13 thread, but Mark or Des should be able to fill you in. Very classy. If you've ever seen a copy of Mark Valentine's Wormwood magazine, it's not light years away from what he and Roger Dobson were doing with Aklo back in the early 'nineties. They were the first small press publication i knew of to employ a professional typist for their magazine. Even the Gothic Society were in awe of that one! I'm sure The Iconostasis of Imperfections will go down well with the Machen fans. Perhaps Lady Thana could join you in a Travelling Proberts production of The Novel Of The White Powder as an encore?

I figured someone might make that joke but in case you're not UK based, Jojo (I somehow don't think you are but it doesn't have where you are on your profile) Reading is a city just west of London

We're actually thinking of making a couple of short films for festivals, but of course the Vault will be the first to hear all!!

Well the event went really well and was surprisingly well attended by absoultely nobody I knew, whcih is always encouraging for...ahem...influencing new potential readers. The day began with Gwilym Games giving a lecture on libraries in HPL's work, followed by a panel discussion on The Necronomicon. After this we had a talk on Kenneth Grant, the real-life 'magician' and how HPL's stories may have influenced his own writing. After that was Gwil Games' often hilarious account of the Samuels-Games Expedition (his title) to Devon to seek out HPL's ancestors. Gwil kept us rolling in the aisles with this and some of the pictures were classics - especially one of Mark Samuels, Quentin S Crisp and Dan (?) where they reminded more than a few audience member of The Goodies After I read from The Iconostasis of Imperfection Gwil hosted an hour of the two of us discussing HPL in Cinema, interspersed with clips and trailers from Lovecraft movies where I got to talk about Charles Band & the whole 17 year saga of the making of Stuart Gordon's Shadow Over Innsmouth, AIP's HPL movies, Tony Tenser's technique of coming up with movie titles, and finishing off with a big plug for Rare Exports. All this, mulled wine and Lovecraftian mood music as well - well done, Reading Central Library!

Glad it went well for you, Lord P.. How did The Iconostasis of Imperfection go down with the great unwashed? Also, was Mark wearing his Beardsley/ Aklo badge (see below) in the Samuels-Games Expedition photos? i bet he was, the fiend! Mark Valentine & Roger Dobson (eds.) - Aklo: The 1890's Edition (Caermaen Books, Winter 1990/ 1991). Aubrey Beardsley Arthur Machen - A Preface to The Three Impostors Alan W. Lear - Crueller Than God Arthur A. Sykes - The Great Pan-Demon: An Unspeakable Tale Mark Valentine [introduction] - Hubert Crackanthorpe: Ten Vignettes David Cowperthwaite - The Exquisite Madness Of Prince Akbhar Colin Summerford: Introduction by Roger Dobson - Arthur Machen: A Tribute Simon Clark - Carry His Brother, He Walked On Jon Wynne-Tyson - Redonda: The Question Of Sovereignty Oscar Wilde - The Doer Of Good Brian R. Banks - One Dodo Had Wings: The Last Resting Place And Reputation Of Arthur Symons Ron Weighell - The Chestnut Husk John Gale - The City On The Farther Shore Of Sable Lake
ILLUSTRATIONS Aubrey Beardsley, Alan Hunter, Arthur A. Sykes, Stephen Skwarek, Edmund H. New, Rupert Cook, Will Farrow, Baron Scotfield, Jack and Rita Tait, William Rothenstein, John Coulthart, Ciolkowski. can't remember for the life of me who first put me onto Aklo, but they must have got me confused with somebody intelligent as this is serious literature we're talking about and much of it flew way over my head. the oddest thing was, it made for a neat companion volume to the Gothic Society's avowedly decadent Udolpho (nee The Goth) which came along around the same time. trust me, you'd have been a natural for Udolpho, John!

Couldn't tell I'm afraid, but he did look very tastefully (and seasonally) attired in linen!
