NEL (1983)
Steve Crisp '...it hadn't gone as the books had promised. Something had gone wrong, despite all her care, despite the magic circle. The spirit - Valerie remembered suffocating, remembered drowning - the spirit had not obeyed her commands - the spirit had - "Possessed you," said a voice so close it might have come from a man in bed beside her...' THE DREAMS HAD come. Dreams of a bloody, deranged past. But not her past. Dreams of sheer terror. Her future. Dreams of huge evil-eyed rats. And dreams that were not dreams at all but waking, nightmarish reality.

That artwork is fabulous. Wonder how the book is ? Never read anything by her.

She's fantastic - well worth seeking out. Familiar Spirit is the only novel I've read by her. It's a very early work and in my opinion not her best. But I've read two of her short story collections plus random stories here and there and loved most of them.
