Charles M. Collins (ed.) - A Walk with the Beast (Avon, 1969) Charles M. Collins - Introduction
Vernon Lee - Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady Frederick Marryat - The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains William Wood - One of the Dead D. Scott-Moncrieff - Count Szolnok's Robots Ambrose Bierce - The Man and the Snake Irvin Ashkenazy - The Headless Miller of Kobold's Keep David H. Keller - Tiger Cat Nugent Barker - Curious Adventure of Mr. Bond Sir Frederick Treves Bart - The Elephant ManBlurb: THE WERE-BEASTS! Snakes, tigers, wolves - even a particularly horrifying elephant creature - abound in this collection of vintage terror tales. A woman lives as a tiger: a young prince is enmeshed in the coils of a snake-woman: all the people of all these tales live with the threat of the beast - and sometimes the beast within!Following on from Fright and A Feast of Blood, Charles M. Collins' third (and final?) collection has not yet fallen into my clutches so, no surprise that (a) it's the best and (b) i'm missing a story. This time the guilty party is David H. Keller's conte cruel Tiger Cat which is a blow as he was capable of some well nasty stuff when he set his mind to it as greatest hits collection Tales From Underwood amply demonstrates. The Headless Miller of Kobold's Keep ( Weird Tales, Jan. 1937: as by 'G. Garnet') is as over the top as you'd hope; narrator Robert Darnley, an antique dealer adrift in hillbilly country, falls foul of the decapitation happy locals - in particular that creepy old-timer with a monstrous eye in the centre of his forehead, operates the pumps at the local gas station. Nugent Barker treats Mr. Bond to a woodland pub-crawl, but what strange names the Sasserach bothers have bestowed upon their inns! The Traveller's Head, The Headless Man, The Rest Of The Traveller .... Part acknowledged 'classics', part pulp insanity, Collins' mini-paperback library makes for a nifty wee set.
