I (partially) read 3 interesting, short horror stories recently but I can't remember the names of them. Can anyone help? The first story was set around Halloween and involved a little girl who was excited and curious about the mysterious costume that her father would be wearing. He tells her he'll show it to her if she goes to bed. He tells her he'll be in shortly wearing his frightening costume... Needless to say, the door creaks open and the little girl sees a hideous dwarf crawling across the floor towards her bed. She squeals with delight, throws the bedclothes over her head, then starts to wonder why her "father" is so small..... (I stopped reading at this point) The second story was written for young adults and (i think) set around Halloween. It began with two children, a boy and a girl, sitting on the porch outside their house. They are debating the existence of ghosts when they are surprised to see a pale little girl lurking in the bushes. The pale girl tells them she will show them a ghost if they follow her... So she leads them to an abandoned house and says "It's about time". The other children ask "About time?" and the girl says "It's about the time she died..." (Again, I stopped reading at this point) The third story involved a young man who becomes convinced that the round wooden ball-shaped thing on the end of his stairway bannister was haunted... or was some type of supernatural entity or something. He hangs his coat on it and the shadow it throws appears to be the figure of a bald man. Eventually he convinces himself that it's all in his imagination. But of course, when he looks at the starcase bannister again, he realizes that the round wooden thing on the end is gone.... Hopefully someone can recognize the stories from my descriptions and put me out of my misery.

The first two seem to ring (very distant) bells for me... could they be by Robert Westall?

The first one sounds so familiar, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. Annoying when that happens...

Well after much research I managed to track down one of the stories I was asking about.... The first story was set around Halloween and involved a little girl who was excited and curious about the mysterious costume that her father would be wearing. He tells her he'll show it to her if she goes to bed. He tells her he'll be in shortly wearing his frightening costume... .... As it turns out, this story is "The Ghost" by Catherine Wells.

I believe the 3rd story is "Nule" by Jan Mark. It's a children's story where a family move into an old house. The post at the bottom of the stairs has a large ball on top. The daughter puts a hat on the post and jokes that it’s a person. The son finds it disturbing and he wakes up one night to hear strange sounds on the stairs. There is a suggestion that the post has come alive. Our house had a similar post on the stairs, so this story gave me terrible nightmares as a child.
