As with most things the truth is far more unbelievable than fiction. In this case the actual history of horror far outstrips any attempts to invent it. There are many absolutely crappy encyclopedias of witchcraft with as much appeal as that faint smell of incense that afflicts those entering New Age book shops in the hope of a finding a pulp classic misplaced in the oddments box. Rossel Hope Robbins, on the other hand, has produced an accurate, erudite and interesting tome with lots of illustrations from wood cuttings. A must for the writer looking for a vivid 'burning at the stake scene' Don't read it before eating.
