He doesn't seem to have been discussed on VOE. You guys dig the Amicus stuff and Norman J Warren, but what about Walker? A seriously underrated director in my book. Frightmare is a total classic, House of Whipcord is straight out of a Pan Book of Horror, and the whole vibe is that late-Hammer sleazy 'groovy age' vibe, but quite dark and not silly.
I picked up the Anchor Bay DVD boxed set off ebay a couple of years ago, highly recommended. He was a great hack with a visual talent (reminds me of Argento a bit, not sure why). Started out making 'sex films' and was lined up to do the Sex Pistols film at one stage, as I recall.
Any fans?

Oh I'm a very big fan of Mr Walker's work - nihilistic, angry, opinionated, and often over the top but without ever becoming pantomime. Whenever I feel I need reminding of how good the genre can be I watch FRIGHTMARE which I think is his best.
I see FLESH & BLOOD SHOW has just been released on DVD in the UK, with the 3D bit!

Oh come now Mr Marsh!
House of Whipcord is brilliant Frightmare is brilliant House of Mortal Sin is slightly less than brilliant but still lots of fun Schizo isn't brilliant at all but the murders are fun The Comeback isn't great either but has that horrible murder at the start and the most ludicrous climax outside of Corruption House of the Long Shadows is.....all right I suppose. I like the bit with Louise English and the acid.

can i add a vote for The Flesh And Blood Show? sleazy down at heel atmosphere, a decent script from Alfred Shaughnessy (he turned Barbara Shelley into a cat and wrote for Upstairs Downstairs - class!), and a good cast. grubby and nasty, if not particularly graphic.
cool it carol is an odd one - the only one of his sex films i've seen, and it was - um - well, i was told it was a comedy and so couldn't get it first time around as i was waiting for the laughs. but it's actually a tawdry drama, and rather good on that score as i discovered second viewing. askwith, again, is rather good (as in F&B Show) and could actually act before mugging became second nature (though to be fair, it was what was asked of him later).
that's a great comment, mr 'wick - walker is like argento in that he has a great eye (accidental if you believe some of his colleagues) for the visual, but is bollocks on story, generally. i like david mcgillivray, but did the fact that he often banged 'em out and had to rewrite on the hoof does show in the 'classic' walkers as regards narrative.

Apparently Alfred Shaugnessy did the first draft of 'Whipcord'.
McGillivray claims he wrote a lot of the camera directions into the scripts, which may be one of the reasons he & Walker refuse to talk to each other now

Flesh and Blood Show is great fun. Exploitation at its best But I loathe House of the Long Shadows. What a waste of a great cast. Whoever thought the idiotic ending was a good idea should be deeply ashamed of himself.

the whole vibe is that late-Hammer sleazy 'groovy age' vibe, but quite dark and not silly. The only one I've seen is Frightmare which, along with everyone else i guess, i remember now for Sheila Kieth's convincingly demented portrayal of a suburban cannibal. I like the sound of House Of Whipchord. The plot puts me in mind of something straight out of the sex & sexism pulps of the 'thirties!

I've only seen it once and found it bleedin' terrible. There some as claim its a bizarre commentary on Lord Longford, Mary Whitehouse and the permissive society.

What's this? a film whose plot seems to consist entirely of young petty criminals (all girls, obviously) being stripped, chained up and punished by a sexually-repressed old martinet and her blind husband - and you don't rate it?

Yes Dem, I wouldn't pass that one by. Lack of a plot, indifferent acting, poor lighting and garish costumes could only enhance the pleasure...

I am a big fan of Walker, and rate the usual films quite high myself. The Flesh And Blood Show isn't my favorite of the bunch (that goes to House Of Whipcord)-but Candace Glendenning.... Well, if anything, F&BS does contain the classic line “If only it wasn’t so tragic and horrible, it would almost make a movie script.” I recently got a copy of Man Of Violence and really liked that one-the same pissed off attitude in a different genre. Also, one of my prize possessions is a one-sheet that contains ads for Whipcord as PHOTOGRAPHERS MODELS and it is paired up with something called HOOKERS REVENGE. And that would be one of my all time favorite films, Thriller-A Cruel Picture / They Call Her One Eye. You can see it here, I couldn't get the image to imbed for some reason. david-z.blogspot.com/search?q=hookers+revenge

Yep, I am a big Peter Walker fan. FRIGHTMARE was my particular favourite of all his movies. And wasn't Sheila Keith (once described in a horror mag as a "distaff Karloff") brilliant as that psychotic old woman? HOUSE OF WHIPCORD was very enjoyable too. The Webmaster www.horrorwriters.net

Hmmm, the alleged social satire isn't exactly its strong point. But it's definitely worth watching if only for Sheila Keith's OTT turn as the sadistic dyke warder and the surprising pathos of Patrick Barr as the (going blind, going senile) old judge.

Your nice middle-class auntie who will DRILL THROUGH YOUR SKULL WITH A BLACK & DECKER SO SHE CAN EAT YOUR BRAINS RAW. Sheila Keith scares the hell out of me in that film. Genius! I guess it must be just about the 'nastiest' film to have been made in the UK up to that date. To be honest I'm not sure there's ever been a British movie to top it in terms of sheer visceral impact. More gore has certainly been splashed about, but not necessarily to as much effect.
