I only just learned of this myself. Although it's a few years since we last met face to face we still maintained an irregular corerespondance through emails and every Christmas we always exchanged cards. In fact this coming Monday I would have addressed one to him. I can't believe he left us at just 56.

This is very sad news. It's also sad to hear about the death of Richard Staines. Will read 'Keeping Your Mouth Shut' and 'No Such Thing as a Friendly' in memory.

This has been an enormous shock to me. I had not met up with Mark for some years, but we were friends in the late 1980s / early 1990s, in the South London area, often meeting up in various pubs along with two or three others. He was very young then. I shall write something more substantial in due course after processing this very very sad news. RIP Mark. EDIT (9/12/23): My reflections on the sad passing of Mark Samuels… dflewisreviews.wordpress.com/2023/12/09/mark-samuels-rip/

Dreadfully sad news. Was lucky enough to meet him once in the company of Dem, Pulphack and Lord P. With Mr Mains on this, the Richard Stains collection was one of my favourites and showed another terrific side of Mark.

On further reflection, I was privileged in many ways in the earlier days of my writing and reading activities, e.g. I went to school with Michel Parry and, later, I socialised with Mark Samuels as a friend before he had started writing seriously.

RIP Mark. Thank you for your work and the many fond memories — the night Fritz refers to above not least of them.

I just checked and at one time, there was an authorized electronic edition of The White Hands, but it appears to have been withdrawn (by the publisher I would presume). It is available as an audiobook--I do not share the widespread love of hearing somebody drone away on these, though once in a blue moon I'll stumble over one where the reader doesn't just ruin every sentence, every mood, with their bland delivery.
There are copies of the print edition available around $50 on the used market. So it goes.
It is so sad reading reviews of the book and knowing he will no longer be among us to write his original tales of the horrors we live with today.
Hel.

In 1988, Mark Samuels edited and published a wonderful magazine entitled: THE STYGIAN DREAMHOUSE. Its contents were original publications of these stories: Metempsychosis – Mark Samuels Connections – DF Lewis Howls From A Blinding Curve – Simon Clark The Dirty Picture – Peter F Jeffery Before God – Steven Samuels As well as an editorial by Mark, there was some amazing artwork by Desmond Knight and Steven Samuels.
