Impressive shelf, James. Seeing this, I wonder if someone has ever read Varney, the Vampire from the first to the last page (except the poor editor of course).
I did, and enjoyed doing so pre-Vault, circa gloompunk. A library loan, (Dover?) 2 or 3 vols, though I'd never have attempted the Wordsworth; the micro print is just too cruel. One of the loveliest M&S covers, though.
Please reread so you can tell us about it in greater detail.

All systems go on the Arthur Machen compilation.
Suggestions for essential items for inclusion are welcome.
All the best,
Derek

If the upcoming Arthur Machen collection is going to be one volume, the short stories and novels I would pick include the following.
The Lost Club The Great God Pan The Inmost Light The Three Impostors The Red Hand The Shining Pyramid The White People The Bowmen

To give it its best chance of success, I think we have to include a certain amount of obvious material, but it would be good to diversify into the less obvious.
I shall make enquiries...

I picked stories by Arthur Machen that I like. I picked some that I do not like but others do. Some of his less obvious stories aren't good at all. Saying that, there is enough good material for a good omnibus edition.

Hi Wordsworth, There is an Arthur Machen appreciation group on "social media" (where you'd expect if you use social media); it was being discussed in the M. R. James group recently. I found this brief recording of Arthur Machen discussing the vexed topic of realism in fiction and drama--fascinating to hear his voice. I appreciated the pronunciation of "Pall Mall" and "Don Quixote." www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxJ_CCWUXMoHel.

I've popped a poll on to the Arthur Machen FB group this morning (kicked off with the title suggestions made by yourselves) to see which titles are most in demand. I'm back two days with Wordsworth now so hoping to drop in at The Vault a bit more regularly. Would a poll on this feed be helpful too for those not on FB? Emma

Hi Emma ā lovely to hear from you! A poll would be fine, though I'm not sure there are that many of us left to contribute. Are you still in touch with Mark Valentine, editor of The Black Veil and The Werewolf Pack? He'd be the best person I can think of to compile a selection of Machen's greatest hits, balanced with less familiar fragments. I'll add Out of the Picture to the stories already mentioned.

I'll leave it to the FB poll in that case and add Out of the Picture. We're getting a lot of response on there which is great. We noticed that Mark is involved with the Friends of Arthur Machen so he's on our radar! Thanks for your help and support all, it's very much appreciated. Emma

Afternoon All, Thought check in and give you an update on the Machen collection. Unfortunately David Stuart Davies was unable to complete the project for us as planned but Stephen Carver (who has written a number of blogs for us recently) has taken over and received the list of proposed titles from yourselves with enthusiasm! We're looking at a mixture of the 'classics' as well as some of the lesser known ones you've suggested. As you can imagine, tracking down copies of the more obscure stories for typesetting has been a challenge but I hope to be able to share a contents list with you soon. Artwork has not been chosen yet as we've been very busy with new covers on our Classics (unfortunately Three Men In A Boat hasn't had the makeover treatment yet...) but the Boss has been looking at the artist/illustrator suggestions you've made with interest. We're looking at a September 2024 release date. Hope you're keeping well Emma

Hi Emma
An alternate story suggestion - the shorter, original version of The Great God Pan as appeared in the Dec 13 1890 issue of short-lived newspaper The Whirlwind. Not sure if it's featured in any previous Machen collections? Not sure where you'd find a copy, though. Also, The Ceremony, as recently revived in Katy Soar's Circle of Stones for the British Library Tales of the Weird series, very short, easy to find, reads a little like a companion piece to The White People.
Looking forward to seeing the cover art!
