2023
(Just a quick mock-up until final cover gets sorted)
CONTENTS:
'The Knack of Imparting Plausibility': A Biography of Oscar Cook
‘Dead Souls’ ‘The Day of Blossoming’ ‘The Brass Spear’ ‘Jade’ ‘The Creature of Man’ ‘After Six Months’ ‘The Great White Fear’ ‘Golden Lilies’ ‘The Sign’
The Warwick stories‘Piece-Meal’ ‘Boomerang’ ‘His Beautiful Hands’
The District Officer Peter Dennis stories‘Si Urag of the Tail’ ‘Tembuku’ ‘When Glister Walked’ ‘Corn-Gold Hair’ ‘The Crimson Head-Dress’
Working on this over Xmas, found some new information on Oscar - and reprinting for the first time in 86 years a 'lost' short story called 'The Sign' and 'After Six Months'.
PS:
The British Library used to have these, but their copies were destroyed in the Blitz. If anyone has any of the following magazines with any of these stories in, scans would be appreciated. If not at least it completes the bibliographal information.
The Day of Blossoming (Hutchinson’s Adventure-Story Magazine, Aug 1925) Tembuku (Hutchinson’s Adventure-Story Magazine, Mar 1925) - at moment I have used an excerpt from The Seventh Wave which I believe contains the short story in a truncated form Jade (Hutchinson’s Mystery Story Magazine, Aug 1926) Marriage Gold

That all looks truly grand, Johnny. Fascinating photo of Cook. Another former colonial administrator who became entangled with the Weird.
cheers, Steve

Creepy Stories : A Classic Collection, introduced by Fred Urquhart, has four of Cook's stories including one called When Glister Walked. Looking I see it is a reprint of The Sacred Jars. WHEN GLISTER WALKED SI URAG OF THE TAIL THE GREAT WHITE FEAR BOOMERANG Creepy Stories is a rather hefty tome. Vault thread on Cook: vaultofevil.proboards.com/thread/1293/oscar-cook

East of Kinabalu : Tales from the Borneo Jungle by Datuk Leslie Davidson mentions Oscar Cook.
"there was a copy of an old book Borneo — The Stealer of Hearts by one Oscar Cook which, I was told, had a chapter or two on the Labuk"
"Where, I wondered, is the sombre spirit of sadness, the SSS, which Oscar Cook said I would find in the Labuk? How could he have found this marvellous region to be so depressing? Where else in this world could a man lie in a sunken bath with a gin and tonic in his hand, watching life’s rich tapestry unfold on a jungle river, and with the smell of James Lloreno’s fricassé of Philadelphia Fowl wafting through from the kitchen?"

Thanks, but I know all this already, as I've contributed to the thread in question etc, etc ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

The Bodleian Libraries have copies of Hutchinson's adventure-story magazine dating from those years. They are closed stack so reference only.
Cambridge University Library, The National Library of Scotland, and Trinity College Dublin Library might well have them.
The National Library of Wales is trickier, as it only had limited rights to begin with.

Credit where credit is due - didn't even think of the Bod, now have someone getting the stories from there for me. A heartfelt thank you, you'll be thanked in the finished book!

So we're up to seventeen stories so far, fingers crossed we might have a further ten to add to the contents by the end of the week. Mike Ashley has sent me copies of his correspondence with Christine Campbell Thomson, with a few unpublished nuggets, have found an illustration of Cook, another new photo of him (maybe a decade older than the one from his bio and the other one I found) which is lovely. All being well book should be out later in the year. Would be sooner, but was rushed to hospital on the 1st of January and was quite close to kicking it. Am slowly recovering now.

Crikey, hope you recover quickly, Johnny, and look after yourself! Be good to see the book this year some time. Mike Ashley is a good bloke - always generous with his time and help.
