hi carole, this is an excellent idea. one of my best chums has struggled with ME/CFS for many years, and although he still works, he has encountered what borders on discrimination (legally, morally certain in my book) for his condition, even though he's excellent at his job. anything that can contribute is a great idea, and it seems fitting to do it like this.
i'm not so au fait on current collectible prices as to offer to do this, but there are those on here who know enough. may i suggest that you let us know if you have a list of the books, then it may be easiest for someone with the knowledge to pick it up by email and run you up correct pricings. i'm pretty sure that once this is done you could then post the list up here - we have a section here for buying and selling.
here, dem. does that sound like a plan?

that it does, mr. hack, although i've no idea how you'd go about pricing them. anyone? Carole, if you've not already done so, it's an idea to repost your message on the British Fantasy Society forum as they have a far larger membership than us and there should be someone among their crowd will offer decent advice. i'm not sure, but don't the BFS hold auctions at their conventions? i was sorry to learn of Alan's death. i bought Spirits of Another Sort on publication and have enjoyed a number of his stories, notably the plague story Dance! Dance! The Shaking of the Sheets. my better half provided the illustrations for his Ruinous Lilies in Aklo. i wish you every success with your campaign.

I think your best best would be to contact Andy Richards at Cold Tonnage Books - he has several of the rarer Haunted Library publications at around the $20 - $30 on ABE books - if you give him the list he might be able to buy them off of you, if not, point you in the direction of someone who would be interested. Depends on how many you have, the titles on offer and what nick they'll be in. You wont get dealer's rates for them he'd have to make a profit, but he's a really stand up bloke.

I was a friend of the late Alan W Lear who wrote several stories for the Haunted Library Publications. After his death it was down to my husband and I to sort out his writings and his collection of books, musics and DVDs. All of it would been lost as he lived in a council house with no family that he was in touch with at the time of his death. carole, forgive me, but i have to ask: did Alan not keep copies of the paperbacks his stories appeared in? that would bulk out the list and raise more money. we could likely compile a bibliography of his work, but off the top of my head i recall he had Let's Do Something Naughty in Herbert Van Thal's 25th Pan Book Of Horror Stories (1984), the aforementioned Dance! Dance! ... in Dalby's Mammoth Book Of Ghost Stories 2 (Robinson, 1991), and a number for Mary Danby's anthologies for young readers including Gruesome and Dead Letter in Nightmare's 2& 3 respectively, (Armada, 1984/ 1985) and Whoever Heard of a Haunted Lift? ( The Green Ghost,Armada, 1989). anyway, i hope you manage to raise a decent sum for such a worthy cause.

While 'Haunted Library' have continued to publish occasional booklets following 'The Fenstanton Witch' in 1999 - these were 'Occult Sciences': Previously unpublished paper by MRJ (2004), 'Tales from Lectoure': Previously unpublished talks by MRJ (2006) & 'A Bibliography of the Writings of M.R. James': Compiled by Rosemary Pardoe (2007) and, of course, the regular G&S MRJ Newsletter - there hasn't been a Haunted Library booklet devoted to new fiction since William I.I. Read's 'Call of the Tentacle' back in 1997. I'm happy to say that this is soon to change, with a new booklet coming out later this year (which is also the 150th anniversary of Monty's birth), possibly to coincide with 'The Ghost & Scholars Book of Shadows', Sarob Press's anthology of sequels and prequels to MRJ's own stories (featuring quite a few names well known to this board). A few details still to be cleared up regarding the booklet, but more on this shortly.

Please keep us posted!

Also the Sarob Press anthology is extremely exciting news as well. Please keep us posted! Well, Ro is editing the Sarob book, which is due to be released in September, and she's given me the 'ok' to mention it and the line-up... though I won't reveal which of MRJ's stories have inspired what, but you'll be able to guess some. (I'll also start a proper thread for the collection closer to the time.) The Ghosts and Scholars Book of Shadows"Alberic de Mauléon" by Helen Grant "Anningley Hall, Early Morning" by Rick Kennett "The Mezzotaint" by John Llewellyn Probert "Quis est Iste" by Christopher Harman (overall winner of the G&S competition that led to the collection) "The Guardian" by Jacqueline Simpson "Between Four Yews" by Reggie Oliver "The Mirror of Don Ferrante" by Louis Marvick "Fire Companions" by Mark Valentine "Of Three Girls and of Their Talk" by Derek John "The Gift" by C.E. Ward "Malice" by David A. Sutton "Glamour of Madness" by Peter Bell

Great to hear from you lurkio, and thanks for the updates. Fascinating line-up for the Sarob anthology. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Reggie Oliver would feature, and i suspected David Sutton would be involved in some capacity, but have been out of the loop for so long that at least four of these names (including the competition winner ) are new to me. Lord P is a pleasant surprise, and i remember being very taken with C. E. Ward's Gunpowder Plot all those years ago.

BTW, I did get info from Ms. Pardoe about the upcoming Haunted Library Publication /"Occasional Booklet". .. while I was informed as to who the author is I think Ro wants him to be able to release the details himself (it is obviously a "he" and an author still very much alive). It is tentatively due this autumn. I'm very excited by this.. in fact I just peed a little.

Great to hear from you lurkio, and thanks for the updates. Cheers, Dem. I'm in and out of the Vault all the time, living up to my name by lurking. Don't post as often as I like, since I'm either guilty of thinking I'll post about that tomorrow when I can string something coherent together, or I'm on a computer where I'm not logged in and can't remember my password. Some excellent writers in there, and Ro told me that the quality of the entries was of such a high standard that it was a difficult competition to judge. Also that many very good stories didn't make the list because, apart from having to stick to a maximum page count, there were lots of entries around certain MRJ originals - "Oh, Whistle", "Casting the Runes" and "The Mezzotint" seem to have been the most popular choices. I'm thrilled that the competition got such a good response, as this book seems a lovely birthday present to MRJ, showcasing how his influence lives on still.

(it is obviously a "he" and an author still very much alive). I can confirm the first statement quite categorically, but as for being still very much alive... at this precise moment in time I'm not so sure about the very much part! Er... thanks! I don't think I've had that effect before. One to add to the CV!
