I feel like most Italian genre directors that started earlier and persisted till the end dabbled with whatever genre was hot at the time (peplum, sex comedy, crime, giallo, horror, western, spy, etc.) Almost all of them directed a few, despite what they became known for.

You are of course right. First and foremost they worked to put bread on the table. A few tried to also work within their interests like Carlo Lizzani but most just did one movie after the other until the industry collapsed.
