Covers you love: Bearing in mind we already have threads for the worst, most badly posed and somewhat risque, this ones nice and straightforward. Covers you love! Can't even date the one above as half the book is missing (!) but the second is the Panther 1968 edition. There's just something in the squalor, brutality, pathos and tragedy of Newgate that seems to bring out the best in these artists.

Obviously not. I require lessons, if anyone is prepared to give them!

Obviously not. I require lessons, if anyone is prepared to give them! To show that cover, Coral, use the IMG Code which Photobucket also provides - it's the last option provided, I think. Basically, you just paste the image's url between [/img] To spy on other members' posts, you can click the Quote button (when you're logged in) and that also shows how pictures have been linked, centered, etc.

WOOP! I did it! Thank you ever so much! Technophobia is no fun, I can tell you.
Earlier on this year I voted for this cover in a just-for-fun which Ramsey Campbell cover is your favourite. It won.

I don't have a lot of the British paperbacks I used to have, but most of the time, I thought the British covers in the '80s and early '90s were better than the U.S. covers. Here are a couple of McCammon examples that are my favorite covers: I've posted this elsewhere, but all the British McCammon covers can be seen here. I'm also quite fond of the British 3D holographic cover for Michael Slade's Ghoul: Hunter

The Third Ghost Book Ed. by Lady Cynthia Asquith (PAN 1957) No idea of the artist but you've gotta love this cover. It's the campest thing I've ever seen on a horror/ghost book... Unless you know better....? It's almost crying out for a caption don't you think?

We should have a contest on this one, I agree.
But I'm not going first.

That is unquestionably the definitive 3rd Ghost Book cover! Thanks for posting it, nightie! yeah, I think we should start running caption comps too. If anybody would like to get us started just begin a new thread in off topic or some place.

It's almost crying out for a caption don't you think? I think the pirate's saying, "Aharr, stand by to repel boarders!" but I could be wrong...

Or maybe, on further reflection;
"Carruthers made a mental note not to use Jolly Roger's escort agency the next time he came to town on business but since he'd already paid in advance, it couldn't hurt just this once... could it?"

Or on the other hand, maybe the pirate's saying;
"Aaar, I think this be where I'll bury me treasure tonight... Aharr! 'x' marks the spot..."
Then Carruthers says something flirty like;
"Have you hoisted the main-sail or are you just pleased to see me?"
And then I expect they'd spend the rest of the night taking it in turns to man the crow's nest...

It's almost crying out for a caption don't you think? I think the pirate's saying, "Aharr, stand by to repel boarders!" but I could be wrong... He looks to me more as though he's saying: "Ooh those jim-jams! Get you, ducky!" A few weeks ago, I saw a copy of The Third Ghost Book with this cover on sale in the Fantasy Centre on Holloway Road. Might have been sold by now, though.
