What time's Mark on? As I should be up for Dracula (58) at the IMAX (which should start at nine, introducd by Jimmy Sangster) I might try to cut along.

Hi Franklyn
I'm not sure what time between 6.30 and 8.00 I'll be shoved away from the wine in order to recite. I'm going to be reading from "Sentinels", which is my London Underground cannibal horror tale.
Anyway, hope to see you there! Mark S.

Not looking good. The IMAX has sold out. Dracula is on at Shaftesbury Avenue but the timings aren't good. I can see it at the NFT on Sunday, but can I justify £20 train fares twice in a week???

It looks as if I'll be up first for the author readings (which would be shortly after 6.30pm I imagine). After the others have done their thang, there's going to be a Q&A session with the scribblers and Stephen Jones about the state of modern horror. And after it's over; OFF TO THE PUB! Mark S.

Anybody else up for this? I'm thinking they might need some help with this wine we keep hearing so much about (I've been to a Waterstones Halloween launch before, back in 1994 for Prof. Anscombe's The Secret Life Of Laszlo, Count Dracula/ Jenny Uglow's Vintage Book Of Ghosts. Bottled Becks in an ice bucket that time )

I'd like to, but if Presteigne is too far, London certainly is.

Damn! And I have one of those new fangled electronic fags (with Noel Coward-esque cigarette holder) especially for the occasion too...
Carpe Diem!

Hey, thanks Andy(s). Sorry that you couldn't make it this time, maybe the next? Really great to see you last night, Dem. Thanks for coming along. Apparently they ran out of wine just before the end, so we all managed to drink them dry! I'm off to Barcelona tomorrow for a week. It's a hard life All best Mark S.

Have a good trip. Are you smuggling Dem with you? Or is his absence down to overindulging in that wine?

I think you know me too well, Charles. That wine didn't stand a 'king chance. Great to see you in action, Mark. Sentinels sounds delicious from that extract ( Death Line reenacted in London's 'ghost' underground stations), though I'm a little worried about the rest of the book. In his state of the horror nation address, Steve Jones, was pleased to report that most of it is taken up with stories you'd not immediately recognise as 'horror'. Fine for people who go for the brainy stuff I guess, but .... *shrug* well, I'll wait until I read it. Pleasure to meet Chris Fowler - could you turn that waistcoat down a bit, Mr. F.? - and the gloriously deadpan Michael Marshall Smith. Also particularly enjoyed the discussion on influences. Mark opted for HPL and Machen, Chris went for Conrad Aiken's Silent Snow, Secret Snow and Michael only got into it when a mate made him read King & Straub's The Talisman in return for him tackling Lord Jim. Michael doesn't have a story in this year's effort but I got him to sign my copy anyhow - despicable groupie that I am I wasn't gonna pass on an opportunity like that. A word on the Waterstone's staff (who'd all dressed for the occasion). The shop was due to shut at eight, the manager had done a bunk and these kindly souls let it overrun for nearly half an hour. One gent I spoke to was only paid 'til six. They were incredibly good natured about it all and I guess there were several unscheduled trips to the off licence to get more wine (twice as many people showed than they were expecting). The likelihood of any of them reading this is minuscule but just in case - Thank You! Hope you and Mrs. S enjoy your holiday, Mark, and remember me to Quentin when next you see him! I'm getting far too keen in this socialising lark. There aren't even any crippling embarrassments to report this time.

Mark's hosting some photo's taken on the night at: www.marksamuels.net/ Meanwhile, the word around the graveyard has it that the attendance way exceeded expectation and the Mammoth Best New Horror launch may well become an annual event.
