Oh, I forgot to say .. don't forget - when you trawl through the book covers looking for things to post here - us ladies have needs too! Covers showing scantily clad young men would be most welcome! I mean, we don't want to be one-sided about this, do we? *sigh. Interuptions, interuptions .... * Sorry, Caroline, can't really help with the "scantily clad men", but here's that nice Mike Raven and a hooded bloke from the Sphere Lust For A Vampire tie-in. Right, balance restored. So where was I? Oh yeah, Nexus! Now, I'm no prude, but .... just let me sort through the 500 sample covers I've spent all day downloading and will post some more to demonstrate how thoroughly beastly they are.

Hey you!
Do you like girls? Do you like old cars?
Then you need 'Never Had a Spanner on Her'!
For all your raunchy and old crock needs!
Who the hell thought that concept up? It's utter genius.
Did they do one with with girls in bikinis who get mixed up with steam engines, or exotic dancers who collect stamps?

it is a bloody mental concept, and i have to say it didn't work for me. never read Host Of Extras, but i had the other two - one in hardback with a dull cover, and the other in a Pan paperback from the late sixties that had a naked girl arching her back, with toy cars running up over her torso (i know, i know, no bloody scanner when you need it, eh?). it was a bit like their James Mayo p/b covers from that period.
i picked them up because i read Where The Spies Are, the first of his Dr Jason Love books, which was ok (and also had a lot of car fetishising as our medical spy hero loves his vintage sports car - as a non-driver, i can't even remember what it was!) - the film with David Niven actually improved on it! there was more car and less thriller action in these for me, but in this Top Gear world they might be worth a republish!
Leasor's a funny writer, as the first book of his i ever read was one of my dad's when i was a little sprog - a co-author called The One That Got Away, which was about an escaped German POW and was a true story (also filmed, i believe). that was cracker. he is obssessed by cars, though.
but what does that matter when you have three excellent paintings like that? if they did the glam girl/ stamp collector interface, would you have a penny black behind her on the cover, john, or some other stamp?
(penny black is the only rare stamp i know...)

actually, just looking again - and they ARE paintings, aren't they? my eyes... i've been looking too closely at this thread, i think.

I'm not sure if they're paintings or just very fuzzy photos.
As to your questions as regards the stamp cover, how about:
Coming soon from Vault Publications:
The Adventures of:
Penny Black!
She's always getting herself into sticky situations in the brutal yet exotic world of stamp collecting. Come with her into the seedy underworld of gutter pair fabrication in London, the glamorous glitz of First Day Cover Fairs in Monte Carlo, and the always hot, always dangerous world of Commemorative running in the Caribbean!
Yes it's sun, sex and stamps all the way in the first of a series of adventures that pit her against the evil Dr Gibbons & his Prussian army of dangerously lesbian guards!
All written in a morally outraged style to appeal to Daily Mail readers!
Coming Soon!
In cooperation with JLP's Got Carried Away Again Publications!
And he's shocked he can still remember things about stamp collecting from when he was 11!
!!!!
[I'm going to bloody write this now you know]

oh bugger, susan moody's beaten you to it, john, and by 25 years... she wrote seven novels featuring Penny Wanawake, aka Penny Black, the first one being titled that. i thought it sounded too bloody familiar, so i googled a bit. i had the first two in ex-library hardbacks from Macmillan, which is why they rang bells. however, i couldn't tell you what they were like - i either didn't get round to them, or if i did they made such an impression on me that i can't remember a damn' thing about them.
she earns brownie points from me, thohgh for being hack enough to have acceptd a large cheque to pen Love Over Gold, the infamous novel based on the Gold Blend ads. others may not agree, but to me that's admirable, having the sheer gall and gumption to work them up into a novel on request!

Maybe the world's ready for The Return of Penny Black and her E-Male, 'Eric'
I wonder how much free coffee she got for doing the Gold Blend stuff?

I know the cover you mean, only got a really small scan of it though, so here's one of the others instead.
