Princess, you are being naughty. Very naughty girl. H. If I got it at that price (whatever that is) because I love you I'd send it to you and not keep it myself. And it would only cost you 40 pounds (not including postage. Obviously.) That's ten pounds off!

Great comeback. I think you may have a brilliant career in the offing as a fierce snap diva. But don't tell Reverend Mother I said so. She might claim that I'm the spawn of Satan.

Andreas, yes, these are SAD days for bibliophiles. Really wretched. I did order a Simon Raven book from Australia yesterday because even with paying something between $20 and $30 in postage (can't recall the sum now), it was much cheaper than anything available here in the US. I had no idea that postage fees had ballooned between the UK and continental Europe--guess it's more fallout from the "Brexit" insanity/inanity. Best wishes, Steve I'm afraid I mostly read e-books now, as I have access to an online book site (which someone else pays for). Any real books are on my wishlist for admirers to buy. But I try to only read real books in bed, as I've heard its better for the eyes. I'm dipping into Beckford's Fonthill correspondence again, after I mentioned it on here.

Best wishes, Steve I've noticed that postage from the UK & US have gotten way too high (incl. things on that famous auction site). I often see US$19 or so & the equivalent from the UK. I ordered a book in May that was quite reasonable, but I had to cancel because the seller said he had to add another 7 pounds to the shipping cost, which made it higher than I wanted to pay.

Mostly I read letters in bed, usually by poets. I avoid gruesome horror stories at that time.

The charity shops are over really. Oxfam have shops that only sell books (plus music and DVDs) - there's one in Aberdeen that I visit fairly regularly, and it has a few shelves of horror (but a lot more fantasy/SF and crime), and there are others scattered around the country. I think they take a lot of the books that are handed in to the other shops in the area but maybe don't have the space or customers looking for books. They also sell books online - link

Scarlett, I meant to write that I bought that Raven book LAST YEAR. Reading that my fingers typed "yesterday" is only further confirmation that where my brains used to be is some old tangle of bangers and mash.
It's really awful about international postage rates.
Tottering onwards,
Hel.

My brother's a decent soul. Mention I put you on to him and he might give you a discount. He has got really peeved with sending stuff abroad though, as charges have spiralled out of control. Is it fine to say you said I could have 80% off and free postage? Of course my lady. Scott is a decent soul but unlike me, an astute businessman and may well scoff. Andy, posting abroad is a disaster now. I had some CD's delivered from the Netherlands when the UK Brexited. After paying steep costs, an extra bill arrived for £40 from nowhere. My brother's been hit for ludicrous charges for anything going abroad and the USA in particular. His main problem, as I understand it, is that if he doesn't know the buyer he risks the book being lost or them returning the book, which ends in financial disaster. From memory, it was over £25 to post a standard book to the USA.

I think for us old collectors, we just regret the Golden age of charity shop bargains.

Yes, the downside is that they know what they've got and price accordingly, checking going prices online, etc. Still, standard paperback prices in the Aberdeen shop are usually £2.49 / £2.99 which isn't too bad. But you are right, the days of 50p paperbacks or 3 for a pound are largely gone.
