im feeling quite pleased with myself. i spotted a post by local community centre on facebook about a table of free books to come of swap or take for free and the picture showed a book about lovecraft in the pile of books, so i hopped in the car to go have a look, cos you know, free books are always worth having a mooch at to see if anythings to your fancy. ii snagged the lovecraft book and left some books i no longer wanted. i was hoping it was some of his stories but it is a biographical book but i think there are some stories included. just to own up that ive never read any lovecraft before, but i enjoy lovecraft related monsters and stories

What is the book title? I have one written by L. Sprague de Camp. As ebook only.

Hiya, Im hermit im in scotland, and I only discovered this place yesterday.
I was mourning for the days when horror fiction was more adventurous and gritty. I remembered enjoying an occasional pan horror anthology book, and preloved books were interesting to search though in book markets. nowadays i see very little preloved book selections in the charity shops near me, and none of them are ever horror books. this forum seems a good place to lurk and linger.
Another Scottish Hermit, jolly good. The charity shops are over really. There's agonising posts scattered here somewhere about their demise.

There's a last relic of a bookshop here retaining some of the old values with a good SF section which occasionally has horror. Doesn't do an online catalogue, so just occasionally has a decent book or two for anyone in Edinburgh. Don't mention buying online to him as he sees that as a betrayal of all things good. www.scottishbookworm.com/For the severely addicted, my brother finally got his act together and put together a website. He is in Scotland but doesn't specialize in horror. They do come along though. Good for rare things that cost too much money www.hadwebutknown.com/

Your brother's site is attractive, though austere in a way that perhaps is typically Scots--as a Yank, I of course have no right to comment. I see a lovely edition of Norman Douglas's Siren Land, very reasonably priced. And this attractive item from 1934, Beverly Nichols' A Village in a Valley, with a gorgeous Rex Whistler covers: www.hadwebutknown.com/product/village-in-a-valley/Priced at 50 pounds so not a "steal," but undoubtedly a gem. cheers, H.

My brother's a decent soul. Mention I put you on to him and he might give you a discount. He has got really peeved with sending stuff abroad though, as charges have spiralled out of control.

Craig Herbertson, please supply details of why you chose Leibniz, possibly the smartest man in human history, for Leibnitz's Last Puzzle, and what parts if any are based on actual events. Thank you.
Edited to say smartest man in history bit added for dramatic effect. Edited again to say he probably was however. Edited yet again to say please explain why you were unable to spell the smartest man in history's name.

Just yesterday while searching for something I stumbled on AbeBooks upon a British seller who charged for a 4 Pound book 20 Pound of postage and handling. This is ridiculous. But if the postage is as high as it is, someone has to pay it. This is understandable, and no one in his right mind can expect the seller to eat these costs. Of course I never would pay this, so good luck finding a buyer in country. 10 or 15 years ago I ordered 4 or 5 times a year abroad, sometimes even bi-monthly in as far away - for me - places like Texas, I think. Before online selling took off the seller produced a monthly catalogue of the new releases, from crime to romance. Only mass-market paperbacks. This catalogue was done like a daily paper. It arrived like clockwork. It was great. These days are over. Sad. Some issues of an weekly British subscription I have vanished on the way - for the first time in years - and I got a replacement. The parcel arrived, and I discovered a custom stamp. And I thought hurrah, welcome back to 1955. Progress!

Andreas, yes, these are SAD days for bibliophiles. Really wretched.
I did order a Simon Raven book from Australia yesterday because even with paying something between $20 and $30 in postage (can't recall the sum now), it was much cheaper than anything available here in the US.
I had no idea that postage fees had ballooned between the UK and continental Europe--guess it's more fallout from the "Brexit" insanity/inanity.
Best wishes,
Steve
