Photographs of the Unknown by Bob Rickard and Richard Kelly (Hodder & Stoughton, 1980)
In the thread on Encounters book club I said this was one of my 4 books for £1, but as I am pretty sure that was 1979, and Photographs of the Unknown appears to have first been published in 1980, it may have been one of my 3 or 4 obligatory purchases during my first year of membership.
Anyway, the book is a cracker. There are scores of photographs of allegedly paranormal/mysterious things. I knew I had to have it when I saw one of its authors was Bob Rickard, co-author of Phenomena: A Book of Wonders, which I had read and enjoyed immensely not so long before.
Photographs of the Unknown doesn't try to explain the images presented, it just says what is allegedly being shown and more or less leaves it up to the reader to judge if they are genuine.
Some ones I remember:
The famous image of the face of Jesus in the sky, photographed by the crewman of a bomber during the Korean War
The carcass of a mysterious sea creature dragged up by a Japanese trawler in 1977--almost certainly the remains of a basking shark
A number of very dodgy-looking spirit materialisations that happened during seances
A ufo supposedly shining a bright light into a lake at night
A famous image of a car in which the driver is looking into the camera while in the back seat is a woman looking straight ahead. The woman in the back seat is supposedly the ghost of the drivers mother and was taken when he and the photographer were visiting her grave.
The photograph of the girl levitating in the Enfield poltergeist case
An image of Jesus allegedly taken by a priest who had invented a camera that could capture images from the past
Another car photograph showing a Datsun with a little girl in the back seat with said girl supposedly being a ghost
There are many others of ghosts, mysterious creatures, UFOs and so forth. It is well worth reading if you are interested in the area of Forteana.
