Had to look up "champing" too - now I'm thinking there's a potentially brilliant anthology of ghost stories to be had from the theme. Agree it's another splendid issue. Have particularly enjoyed both of Benjamin Harris's articles on John Gordon - his enthusiasm for the author's work glares through - and Lurkio's review of England's Screaming has convinced me I need to think about copping a copy in the new year (atypical optimism). As with previous issue's column, Lady Wardrops Notes would slip seamlessly into The Black Pilgrimage. I’ve got several pieces written for The Everlasting Club which would also fit in nicely, but it’s going to be a very long time before I have enough for The Black Pilgrimage Volume Two!

Champ is made with potatoes, onions, milk and butter. Google for the recipe.

This could be a job for Stephen Jarvis's trusty The Bizarre Leisure Book ... Lets see. Do we know any ghost/ horror stories involving a Sausage Appreciation Society? Or the Street Lamp Interference Data Exchange. The Test-Card Circle. The Wallpaper History Society. The Letter-box Study Group ... how about death by Alan Whicker Impersonation?

There's always chub-fuddling from Nancy Mitford's funny books about the "Hons"--The Pursuit of Love, Love in a Cold Climate, etc. Not really Vault material but I enjoyed them way back when.

My copy arrived yesterday - Antonio's done a terrific job! And always good to see Jim Pitts art.

Would love to read a hobbyists-meeting-a-sticky-end thread. Now what unusual hobbies do we have besides "champing" and Rosemary's "night climbing"? Thought this would be easy, but am struggling to come up with any examples. Is taxidermy a hobby or a profession? Does paintballing qualify, or is that a sport? Several of A. F. Kidd's ghost stories share a Campanology theme (bell-ringing to those of us who have look up brainy words). A model railway enthusiast comes to grief in Alex Hamilton's The Attic Express, Gastropod groupies likewise in Patricia Highsmith's The Snail Watcher and The Quest for Blank Claveringi, though I guess the latter may qualify as scientists?
