Does anyone know who drew or designed the striking covers for this series? They look like pastiches of portraits by the Irish artist Francis Bacon.

Thanks for the heads up James. I'll be sure to get a copy. I know nothing about the artist only that the portfolios he contributed to Whispers are wonderfully grotesque and memorable.

Thanks for the replies chaps but I’m not sure how to read them. My question referred not to Whispers magazine but the five paperback anthologies published by Jove Books.

Thanks for the replies chaps but I’m not sure how to read them. My question referred not to Whispers magazine but the five paperback anthologies published by Jove Books. My mistake. The magazine numbered itself by volumes so I presumed that was what you were referring to. The first Whispers paperback had a cover by Rowena Morrill. But the abstract ones you're interested in were by Marshall Arisman.
