I was just reading something related to barges & thought, "There must be several horror stories that take place on or have a strong association with British canal barges or narrowboats". I just don't know of any. Something from the Terror Tales series or Black Books of Horror? LTC Rolt? I know you won't disappoint me....

Just about finishing up writing a novella (25k) called 'The Cut' where the last half of it happens on a narrowboat. Must be something in the air...

Thanks! I knew there must be something by him, but only checked the titles which in this case gave no clue...

Richard Marsh - The Houseboat: ( The Seen and the Unseen, 1900: Hugh Lamb [ed.], Tales from a Gas-lit Graveyard, 1979). "Have we both suddenly become insane, or do you attribute it to the cucumber we ate at lunch?" Eric and Violet Millen rent The Water Lily for a one-month river holiday. Two years ago, when the houseboat was known as The Sylph, a Cockney named Gertie ("There is reason to believe that, from one point of view, the woman was no better than she ought to have been") was murdered on board by a married sportsman she was blackmailing over their affair. The culprit was never identified. The Millen's are treated to a re-enactment. David Rix - A Taste For Canal Burgers: (Allen Ashley ed.], Creeping Crawlers, 2015). Not especially horrific, but strangely strange.

A barge moored on Shrewsbury canal comes under attack from a murderous South American caiman in Guy N. Smith's Alligators. Rotten luck for porn author Roger Stafford and his home help, Karen, who are settling down to a long-anticipated night of red hot passion at the time.
