An Adam & The Ants Hits album. Not even the obscurer sleaze stuff but the 80s camp chart botherers - Antmusic, Stand & Deliver, Dog Eat Dog. Good to hear a 'wall of sound' version of Zerox (I'm used to that weird demo with the Smurf/Chipmunk hollering 'David Bo-wie!'). Apollo 9 and especially Vive Le Rock are Glam, there's no two ways about it.

i'm on real basil kirchin kick at the moment. british jazzer and experimenter who did a lot of library music, and soundtracks for the likes of The Abominable Dr Phibes and The Mutations.
well, i've had his Worlds Within Worlds pts 3&4 for about 25 years, and it's an incredible album. altered sounds from nature and instruments, tape dabbling, and autistic kids. pre-eno ambient in intent, but demands attention. unlike anything i'd heard before or since. sort of fits in with european avant-garde 'serious' music, but has more heart and less head. i get the idea that Kirchin knew about these developments, but only vaguely as he was more concerned with his own work, and went ahead on parallel lines.
anyway, i bought the Dr Phibes movies on DVD last week, and was reminded of basil's genius, as the second phibes movies has ok-but-a-bit-mundane music. then i got the Trunk records sampler at the weekend, which has some Kirchin on it (Jonny Trunk has released four Kirchin albums, two of which are out of print). so onto amazon i went, and bought the Phibes soundtrack and the two Trunk cd's in print. still waiting for them, but the Phibes soundtrack arrived yesterday.
played it three times already. stunning phasing and use of odd orchestral timbres, haunting melody and vaguely dissonant harmony. it follows the film, and then has a 14 minute 'source' track called the Phibes Suits that Kirchin took bits from or use as cues. it's worth admission for this track alone, which is stunning!
can't wait for the other two to turn up!
oh, btw Trunk also does a lot of soundtrack stuff - i've had John Cameron's score for Psychomania for ages, and they've also released Blood On Satan's Claw. lots of library music, too. the sampler (Now We Are Ten) is only a fiver, and well worth it!

I had no idea that Basil Kirchin did the Phibes soundtrack. Thanks for that information.
J. Trunk used to have a good soundtrack-based show on Resonance FM, though I'm not sure if it's still airing.
His 'dirty fan male' CD is very amusing, too...

I think Trunk records should be supported for bringing stuff out that I never thought I would see (or rather hear). The Psychomania soundtrack is excellent, as is Blood on Satan's Claw.
I always preferred John Gale's music for Dr Phibes Rises Again to the Kirchin, mainly for the lovely Vulnavia's Theme, and the superbly over the top rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Still, I've got Kirchin's Phibes music so I'll go and have another listen!

My 'band' (such as it is) Giant Albino Penguin takes its name from Lovecraft's 'At the Mountains of Madness'...
But onto proper music, I've been listening to a lot of John Cage, especially the 'Daughters of the Lonesome Isle' CD and a fair bit of CRASS (especially 'Best Before 1984' and 'Stations of the Crass').

Who was it on here who used to bang on about Type O Negative? Dem? Found October Rust (1996) in a chariddy shop lodged between Metallica and Sepultura. Saw the picture of some gloomy long-haired young men in a forest. But the music! Nearest reference points I've got - Sisters Of Mercy/Joy Division/Early Verve/Later Killing Joke. Melancholy but not depressing. Great stuff. Other recent listening - Hawkwind's Doremi Fasol Latido and The Hall Of The Mountain Grill, some of the later groovy Clash stuff (Magnificent 7, Radio Clash, Straight To Hell) and some psychedelic folk with The Byrds' Fifth Dimension.

In that case, mr. marsh I shall have to see what i can do about sorting you out with more TON classics, notably Bloody Kisses, Slow, Deep And Hard and the mock-live The Origins Of The Feces (featuring a truly groovy version of Hey Joe and a gloriously morbid Paranoid, i.e., the Sabs)! Spot on with the Sisters reference, too. In fact, the pop smash My Girlfriend's Girlfriend was conceived as a tribute to Mr Eldritch and friends. They do a mean Summer Breeze too.
am currently going through a bit of a Goth retrospective phase so doubtless you will be tortured with something along those lines shortly. Also, have fallen back in love with Mott the Hoople and spent weekend going positively gaga over Daisy Chainsaw again, specially the Eleventeen album. Also, get over to Wire's site and check out their free download mp3's for, in particular, 23 Years Too Late. I think it's quite the best thing they've done since Silk Skin Paws and we all know how great that is! Best news of all: Martian Dance have a tribute page on MySpazz and you get to hear great stuff like the mighty Stand Alone which is unintentionally dead about Vault!

'Eleventeen' was indeed a damn good album. I remember seeing Daisy Chainsaw at Tufnell Park (I think) along with Creaming Jesus and Terminal Cheesecake one time.

Daisy Chainsaw as in 'Love Your Money' Daisy Chainsaw?
Oh my sainted aunt. I've went a bit weak at the knees.

The very same! Mr. Sean, Mr All Things, you are clearly men of taste and discernment and no fooling. Hope All Your Dreams Come True would make my all time top ten ever. I even named a 'zine after it, wrote to Katie Jane telling her the great news and she wisely blanked me completely! I can't find my Type O Negative photo but here is my friend Darlene Daniels who interviewed them once for Nocturnal Ecstacy so it's nearly the same. I've got loads of Daisy Chainsaw photo's courtesy of Mick Mercer but perhaps I'd best ask permish before I upload them.

Taste and discernment? Not two things I'm often told I have!!!! I've gone all shy now...
'Hope All Your Dreams Come True' is probably the best song on the album, but I think 'Sick of Sex', a b-side off one of the first 2 singles just about beats it as their most glorious racket.
Do you remember Red Lorry Yellow Lorry?
