Robert R. McCammon – Swan Song (Sphere 1988, Original Pocket Books 1987, 956 p.) In a future world born of nuclear rage, an ancient evil as old as time roams a devastated, nightmare wilderness. He is the man with the Scarlet Eye, the Man of Many Faces, gathering under his power the forces of human greed and madness. He is searching for a child who has the gift of life, a child names Swan, the child who must be destroyed …I started this a few times, but never came far. Basically it is McCammon's version of The Stand, right down to the length. Even the blurb sounds like King, which of course is no coincidence. When I tried to re-read The Stand long ago I also couldn't get into it again, as the characters were so dull and one-note, and the villain "a big nothing, but not in a horrific way", as Will Errickson so aptly put it in his new and recommended review of the novel on Too Much Horror Fiction. I am willing to bet that McCammon is much more interesting in this.
