Although some might say these should go in the Malevolent Dolls and Puppets thread, I think they deserve a thread of their own, even if they may be much of a muchness:
The Story of A Disappearance and An Appearance - M. R. James
Punch & Judy - Frederic Cowles
The Big Stick - Dennis George Miles (London Mystery Magazine 03/1957)
P & J show operator Charlie Kola scares the kiddies with his ultra realistic Mr. Punch voice. After giving a man in a pub a fractured skull with his big stick prop, he's sent down for two years. Emerging older and weaker, the unnamed narrator is guilted into teaming up with Charlie again, which of course he comes to regret.
This Foolish and Harmful Delight - Cate Gardner - (included in "The Transfiguration of Mr. Punch") - "a grotesque novella set in Hell and theatreland, concerning love, death, dismemberment and a mechanical heart" (from the Egaeus Press website)

Here's some! Bride of Dem Ramsey Campbell - The Puppets (Stephen Jones & David A. Sutton [eds.] Dark Terrors,1995). Lanyon Jones - The Punch & Judy Man (Amy Myers [ed], After Midnight Stories, 1985). Paul Finch - The Punch and Judy Man (Barbara & Christopher Roden [eds.], All Hallows, #24, June 2000).
Elizabeth Goudge - Punch and Judy (A Pedlar's Pack & Other Stories, 1937). Can't tell you anything about this one. It's one of those titles I noted down as a might-be-of-interest.
and:
Guy N. Smith - Manitou Doll, 1981.

Great choice for a thread. One of my absolute favourite stories in Ghosts & Scholars was a Punch & Judy tale: D.P. Watt's "Shallabalah" in G&S Newsletter 26 (2014).

As a continental citizen, I only read about Punch&Judy. Are these still being done before a live audience?
