... and Jim Pitts artwork for Chetwynd-Hayes' The Hanging Tree returns as A View From A Hill. I don't get it, Dem. Mr. Pitts certainly did some lovely illos for Ghosts & Scholars, but why Les Edwards? Why's there a "Les Edwards: A Jamesian Portfolio" here?? (There's already a "Les Edwards: A Portfolio" in RCH's Gaslight, Ghosts & Ghouls book!)

Humgoo, Les Edwards did 20 paintings and illustrations for Curious Warnings; The Great Ghost Stories of M.R. James - and he's also done other M.R. James related paintings in the past - so why not showcase his Jamesian work? I'd say that would be one of the reasons for the portfolio - the other, it might have something to do with him being one of the best genre illustrators this country has seen? Imho of course, but I'm sure that there are others who share that view.

Oh dear! Which do you have? I have a number of James collections. I think I was thinking of the Oxford World's Classics COLLECTED GHOST STORIES. In my defense, it is edited by somebody named Jones. Just not Stephen.

It's a ridiculous thing to do. It's hardly as if James was writing in Middle English. I think though that in today's climate we can expect more of this.

Now I think about it James might have been writing in Middle English, if he was quoting a rare book, as he was partial to dusty volumes in dusty libraries, I haven't read enough to know. I found a poem with a ghost in it, written in Middle English! Stay tuned as I will start a thread on it!

Quite a pity that Phantasmagoria stopped doing Kindle. For all my bitching about its faults, it was easy to get. Still haven't ordered the Ramsey Campbell issue.
