Many thanks to Anna Taborska who just sent on four very lovely photo's of some Vault friends and advent calendar contributors. At first I wondered where to post these, until it dawned that Charlie belongs on the tribute thread devoted to his memory. The late and very great Charles Black in Richmond Park Photo Anna TaborskaAnd from some BHF convention or other, four kind contributors to the Vault Ad Cals. Charles Black, Reggie Oliver, Kate Farrell, Anna Taborska.

Mr. Oliver looks like Vincent Price.

Fabulous to see some pictures of Charles. He was always reluctant to have his picture taken and I know when I asked him for an author photograph when I published Black Ceremonies he was not at all forthcoming!
Seeing these, though, does bring home how much he's missed.
Anyway, I'll be copying these pictures for my files. Thanks Anna!

Anna sent a couple more - one I'm sure you're familiar with from Phantasmagoria #16 - which I'll post elsewhere tomorrow.

Great pictures bringing back very good memories. Hi Craig. I'm guessing the group shot was taken at a BFS Convention Black Book launch?

Tis the season... whilst sojourning in an isolated district of Darkest Flatula (don't ask, it's too ghastly to describe) with family next week, I look forward to perusing some gruesome delicacies in the Vault Advent Calendars of years gone by.
Doffing my cap (if I were wearing one) to all who contributed to make these such ghoulish fun over the seasons and the tides.
cheers, Hel

Last year's mini-version, Vault Bedside Companion, had its moments. This year, we received a poem, already had a vintage story set aside ... and that's about it.

Great pictures bringing back very good memories. Hi Craig. I'm guessing the group shot was taken at a BFS Convention Black Book launch? Yes Dem. Charles introduced himself to me - I was with my brother and didn't know anybody at all. Almost the first thing he did when we met was offer to introduce me to Elen Datlow - this I discovered after was utterly typical of the man - always on the hunt to help others, despite being shy himself. I had a very interesting time connecting with Johnnie Mains, David Riley and his wife and Anna Taborska. Finally descending into designated oblivion with my editor Storm Constantine who has sadly passed away. Having fallen over in the bath and hurt my arm, I was in a poor state for the following morning, where I sat on the Panel with the other Pan Horror authors. I didn't really know anyone except the people who Charles introduced me to. Lovely bloke. Real shame we didn't get to meet more often but he was very kind and helpful as an editor and generally speaking one of the good guys. Much missed.

Charlie remains very loved and missed by so many of us on here.

I have to emphasise it was literally a few seconds after meeting him that he spotted an opportunity for me and it was clear he didn't like that sort of thing and would never do it for himself. Just one of these blokes....

He joined Vault on our first day and remained a loyal, supportive real friend throughout. He had a real sense of mischief about him, too. For one thing, I think he knew more about that mysterious 'Lester Townsend' story, The Man Who Collected Bloch, than he let on ...
I'm sorry to hear about Storm Constantine.

Yeah Storm was a hard one to take. She was fantastic. Only met her once. Unforgettable.

Why did the Advent Calendar cease? I just reread my own contributions, and one of them is absolutely brilliant.

Which was that one, Jojo?
I only learned about the Vault maybe two seasons ago and I’m bummed it’s ended but thanks to everyone who submitted stories I have a bunch of years to catch up on. Every year my Christmas ghost story TBR pile grows faster than I can get through it.
Merry Christmas!
