Hello all!
First time post! I wonder if the Vault of Evil Brain Trust can help me id a book. Way back in the later '70s/ early '80s, my local library had a collection of ghost or horror stories which included re-tellings of the vampire of Croglin Hall and the story of Glam/ Glámr from the Grettis saga. The cover had (what I then thought) was a terrifying picture of Glámr, standing in a doorway. (Disheveled, green top, rotting skin.) Does this ring a bell with anyone? My internet / bibliographic skills are failing me.

Just a wee bump. I'd really appreciate any help I can get on this!

Could it have been a book called More Scary Stories to tell in the dark, originally published in 1984? The first volume in this series of 3 came out in 1981 which seems to fit your chronology. www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/more-scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-by-alvin-schwartz/There seems to be a kind of "cult" for these 3 books among people who are 20 to 30 years younger than me (I was a grad student in the 1980s and have been a lifelong confirmed bachelor so my knowledge of 1980s kidlit is quite limited). Unfortunately the art for the books was "updated" (and there may have been censorship of the texts as well to avoid material perceived as "triggering" or "traumatizing" for the youngsters)... this is why we are not allowed to have nice things. I wish you all the best in your quest. H.

Anyhow, the "more scary stories" volume does include a retelling of the Augustus Hare "Vampire of Croglin Grange" yarn.

Swampi, that's a gorgeous find! It would be pretty amazing if the person's library had that publication since it was a comic book. Very few libraries in the 1980s carried those (in fact, I think most librarians in that period had fairly strict policies against comic books... in part, perhaps, a legacy of the whole Freddy Wertheim "Seduction of the Innocent" bugaboo).
Would be interesting to know just what it was!
cheers, Steve

I know it's a long shot, but couldn't resist giving it a try! There's no mention of this Glam/Glamr (whom I've never heard of) anywhere, but the cover art looks like what I think he's supposed to look like (? or I could be wrong) even though he wasn't in a doorway as ParticipantObserver remembered. I feel the need to help solve this mystery....
Cheers back,
Swampi

He might look like he's supposed to but that is nothing like Beachy Head. (Not that I could even take a long shot at solving it...)
