Hi - I am trying to find a copy of a horror compilation series volume that had a particular short story in it. It may have been a Pan one but I think it might have been Fontana instead. It was a long time ago when I was a teenager and the story went something like this:
Somewhere in the Far East (I think) if a female did something against the law she would be placed into a garden compound where at some point she might be chosen by a male to be a companion for the night. The male in the morning would be then be asked what his favorite physical bit of the female was. In the story the male said legs and what happened next was the female received the punishment of having her legs amputated. I think the story ended with the male's sister having done something against the law was then placed into the compound, was chosen by a male for the evening, who then said his favorite bit of her were her eyes and breasts.
Its all very hazy - it was decades ago but does anybody out there recognize the story line?

Could it be "Punishment by Proxy" by James Connelly from the 10th Pan? It's the 7th story down, on this excellent site (but not as excellent as the Vault of course!):

You are right. It is "Punishment by Proxy". I read this a few month ago for the first time, and it is quite unforgettable. Pan 10 is a good one. |
