Flame and Crimson: A History of Sword-and-Sorcery Thanks for the tip; I am reading it now. I immediately spotted an error, however. Jack Vance never wrote any sword and sorcery, at least not according to the author's own definition.

Vance contributed the story "Morreion," which was in his "Dying Earth" series, to Lin Carter's Flashing Swords volume 1. Another Vance tale, "The Bagful of Dreams," appeared in volume 4 of the series.
It would seem that in Lin Carter's mind as well as that of the reading public, the "Dying Earth" yarns fell within the scope of "Sword and Sorcery."

Blurb: The Weirdest Story Ever Told
The new material includes chapters on the most influential contributors to Weird Tales, as well as contemporaneous authors who should have been contributors to Weird Tales but who were not.
Why are there chapters on authors who weren't in it? Is it just padding, or were people invited to contribute and couldn't think of anything to write about to do with the magazine? I don't see why you would include these writers if there is no link. It seems odd.

Maybe wait a few months, see if any 2nd hand copies become available. You once asked which issues of the mag we'd recommend. All and none is my honest answer to that, but Weinberg's earlier version of this book is a great place to start.

You could ask on that Jack Vance forum that was mentioned. You could start an active discussion, it seems such a busy site that I'm sure someone will see it in passing in a year's time and post a reply. Oh wait, no they won't.
