OK, that's me convinced - I've just ordered it now.

I was quite absorbed in reading Mystery Tour on my morning commute. I actually was unaware that such a custom as a "mystery tour" where one boarded a bus for a destination unknown existed. Presumably that is what the old Beatles album was referring to. I'm not sure we ever had that custom over here. I'm not sure I ever thought about what a "mystery tour" or, for that matter, a "mystery train" would involve. Mystery tours have been going here for decades. Bus and rail companies were running them by the 1950s at least; some coach companies still do them. The most that is revealed before departure is either a rough idea ("a mystery tour of the Peak District" - which still gives hundreds of possible destinations) or "to a seaside destination" (this was the railway method, following a disastrous outing in the early 1970s where hundreds turned up with all the gear for a day on the beach and the train took them to somewhere ghastly inland, like Birmingham or Stockport). They were a well established British pastime by the time The Beatles made the famous album/film, though it's likely that they also ripped off the idea from Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. The bus in The Beatles film ended up in Cornwall, by the way. Once the news leaked out that they were making the film, it was followed by hordes of fans in cars, and in trying to evade them it eventually got wedged on a single-track, hump-back bridge on a remote Cornish lane. That day's filming was curtailed when a terminally pissed off Lennon ran around swearing at all and sundry while ripping the psychedelic stickers off the sides of the bus....

Thanks for the recommendation. Have just ordered this. Am now getting in the mood with a double bill of The Devil's Nightmare and Killer's Moon, two films featuring coach journeys gone badly wrong, though I might substitute Vampires' Night Orgy for one of them.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Favourite story was the waxwork episode. It reminded me of a run-down (and hence creepy) waxworks in Weston-Super-Mare that I visited as a child. I would have cast Nicky Henson as Griffiths and David Warner as Henderson in the film version.

Likewise, the waxwork story was my pick of the episodes, maybe more Tales of the Unexpected than Tales from the Crypt. Loved Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, too. Nigel very kindly allowed us to include one of his 'Micronicles' on the Vault 2017 Advent Calendar. So if you've not yet read it .... Palm

Just ordered my copy, which I'd held off doing so as to make ordering it the nicest way ever to reach Am*z*n's free shipping limit. Naturally I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it.

I look forward to your verdict, Swampi! Strikes me that 'Mystery Tour' makes for ideal Christmas Eve reading - hope it reaches you in time.

Can I reply to myself? It seems I can. "Mystery Tour" arrived yesterday; it was quite enjoyable although I found several stories lacked the punch at the end I was expecting. I ended up liking the final story, about Joe O'Leary, the best.

I bought this on the recommendations here and found it very true to the slightly cheesy, tongue in cheek spirit of the original portmanteau films. I do hope Nigel Taylor has posted a copy under the door of Milton Subotsky's tomb.
