Forthcoming from Shadow Publishing, the follow-up to Rosemary Pardoe's highly popular 'The Black Pilgrimage', is "The Black Pilgrimage 2: Further Explorations in Supernatural Fiction". More details to follow, but expect an electic mix of essays, including on M.R. James and other authors, and the now scarce writings of "Lady Wardrop"...

Very pleased to hear this, and the more eclectic the mix of articles the better. Please send Rosemary our best.

I read the essay Who was Count Magnus? Notes towards an identification, which I found interesting. There was also a later Count Magnus called Magnus Julius De la Gardie (14 April 1668 ā 28 April 1741), the dates don't fit but he was certainly uglier than Jacob De la Gardie, who Rosemary suggested might be the model for the portrait in the story. In fact Jacob has a noble face, unlike the later Magnus. Jacob De la Gardie Rosemary says, "Perhaps MRJ created Count Magnus as a sort of portmanteau figure based on several members of the family." Which seems the most likely.

Last year I read a biography of Queen Christina of Sweden, both Jacob and Magnus Gabriel are mentioned in it. The latter significantly as she seemed to have been strongly attracted to him; eventually he fell out of favour with her and ended up banished to his estates. She is famous for having been responsible for the death of RenƩ Descartes.

Interesting about Queen Christina and Descartes. According to an online source, in 2009 a German philosopher wrote a book in which he speculated that Descartes was poisoned by an insidious Catholic missionary who opposed the French philosophe's views.
In America, Queen Christina is only remembered (and that, nowadays, only by a small minority) for having been portrayed by Garbo in one of her most illustrious films. There was another film about the Queen in the 1970s I believe but I was never able to see it. Years ago (1990s??) I perused a book about the Queen's court when she was living in exile in Italy (I think she abdicated) and her lovers were said to have all been women at that time of her life.

In typical Hollywood fashion Queen Christina was made into a romance. I think even Garbo was fed up with it. In reality queen Kristina abdicated and moved to Italy because she had a passionate interest in the arts.

Rosemary posted to the M. R. James Appreciation Group on social media that she has checked the final proofs of Black Pilgrimage 2, and that the book comprises a formidable 41 articles! I plan to preorder if I manage to see a link in time. If it goes the usual way with these things, only ten copies or so will be printed for distribution to North America (just kidding).
