Loved the story John, but I'm a bit confused by the change of title after following the link to the Screaming Book of Horror - "One Of The Family" seems to be the title of a story by Bernard Taylor. One of the Family was my original title for this story. After I had sent it in I was told there was another story in the book with the same title! (Ie what turned out to be Bernard Taylor's). Hence the title change for mine in the book. This is true

Day Fifteen A Christmas Greeting from Grudge End ...Chrissie Demant A personal favourite from David A. Riley's splendid career-spanning collection, The Lurkers in the Abyss & Other Tales of Terror (Shadow Publications, 2013). The story first saw publication in Stuart David Schiff's Death (Playboy, 1982). Have no idea if this is the case, but I like to imagine the setting is Daisyfield House - as featured in The Worst Of All Possible Places - before it went completely downhill. Meet Prickly, scourge of a council estate, and his infant "kindergarten satanic cult" as they terrorise an elderly resident on the 14th floor ..... Attachments:Prickly - DA Riley.pdf (101.77 KB)

Nigel's tale was short and punchy, and I am a sucker for fair settings. Behind all that laughter and cheer, one can easily imagine all sorts of dark things going on. Nice one from an author I have not read before.

Day Sixteen Reptilian meltdown classes ...Chrissie Demant A contemporary Weird Tale, written especially for the occasion. Drew Salzen is a pen name adopted by a prolific, genre-hopping author and popular contributor to numerous publications, at least three of which may be be familiar to our pulp paperback hardcore. His previous Calendar appearances are a self-contained extract from Fragmented Fears, Three Episodes From Horley Hall, and Random Room: Celebrity Stalker .... and, frustrating as it is, that's all I'm at liberty to reveal. So here's Richard Simmons, Media Studies tutor, to explain how he saved the world ....

David's story 'Prickly' was, I thought, well up to his usual high standard, and it didn't go quite where I was expecting it to. Tower blocks can be creepy at night and David really played on that to good effect to increase the tension as the old lady stalked the children...or that is what she thought she was doing.

Day Seventeen The Plot thickensCast your mind back to the very first Black Book Of Horror in (I refuse to believe this!) 2007. Opening story; the relentlessly bleak Crows, by Frank Nicholas. Frank returned for The Third Black Book Of Horror, after which, nothing .... until his agent kindly forwarded the following spiky festive chiller. Here's where things take a turn for the Twilight Zone. It seems Mr. Nicholas is not especially forthcoming about his past, and it is not our place to speculate as to why that might be. Pressed for a few details about the author, his representative conceded "Frank had some dealings with Satyr/Bullseye/Planet/Gremlin and so on back in the 70s." Wait a minute! Bullseye books? The publishers of The Enchanted Book Of Zodiac Stories? As an astute Helruner alluded elsewhere, could be there is something "not quite as it seems" about this strangely mysterious WorldWide publishing house ...

Drew's story was bang up to date, with shades of reptillian shapeshifters, though I think our narrator would have been better off having Rice Crispies for breakfast. A good one from Drew. Many thanks.

Looks like another winner; too bad I can find no mention of these books online as I'd quite like to buy them....

yes, it almost seems like they are some kind of hellish nightmare, or should I say in the Vault's case - a much longed for nightmare...

Driving Home for Christmas was another story to use a familiar situation--in this case, unease of what might be lurking in the back of your car on a dark night--to good effect. I don't own the BBHs where the author's stories have appeared, so this is my first experience of his writing, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice and creepy tale, and I hope the author pens more of the same.

Day Eighteen That Monday morning feeling Chrissie Demant: "He's a little girl eater. He lives down there under the sea and when the tide is out he stays there, waiting for silly little girls who go playing there ....." - Septimus Dale We open the week with a story from Johnny Mains début collection, With Deepest Sympathy, Obverse 2010 (reprinted, with two additional stories, as Will Anyone Figure Out That This Is A Repackaged First Collection?, Parallel Universe, 2015). If you liked Head Soup, you'll surely enjoy Final Copy as another Pan Horror-obsessive stalks his favourite-author-ever-of-the-moment with a view to extracting one last story for an anthology ...
