A kindly gent by the name of Martin gave me a copy of his fanzine at Zardoz after Nightreader and I nabbed him looking through Paperback Fanatic and tried to pressgang him into joining Vault (he only escaped our clutches due to our being fatally distracted by the bogus pulphack. who was that guy?). This, the sixth issue, dates from circa 1992, and I've had a most pleasant hour acquainting myself with these bad boys and badder girls. See, Martin and his friends are passionate about Juvenile Delinquent fiction and, needless to say, that means loads of pulp! There's a particularly interesting piece (with plenty of cover scans) on Avon's exploitation novels from the 'forties through the fifties, a look at Gillian Freeman's The Leather Boys (book and film), Digit books classics with deliciously lurid titles ( Teenage Jungle, The Violent Ones, Why Must I Die?) and a brief but informative piece on Richard Price's The Wanderers. A right PROPER fanzine with all the good (enthusiasts writing about their most treasured subject) and none of the bad (idiots writing about how oh so very wonderful they are).

Well, if nenonymous has short spiky hair, an off-white raincoat and an urgent need to haul a car full of paperbacks from Camden to Hull, there's a possibility.
Something else I like about Rumble: there's a page reserved for updates and amendments from previous issues. i think something similar would work for Paperback Fanatic with particular regard to the listings should any of us actually be able to turn up anything Justin's overlooked.

Great stuff Dem! You mentioned this on the Zardoz thread and I was hoping you'd put something up. Any way to contact these crummy JDs?

Great suggestion Cal and one I've incorporated into the current issue of The Fanatic. Corrections/additions and correspondence have run in at about 5 pages, so hopefully it'll give the mag a bit more personality and reader interaction.
Thanks!

Yeah, I like the correspondence idea. I think it gives the reader a sense of belonging to a club and that can only be good. Justin, don't forget to start a ' Fanatic suggestions' thread or similar. It seemed to go very well on the old board. I hope Mr. Rumble gets in contact with one of us. Things were going so well until I like ... spoke.

Rumble was a great fanzine, along with Bad Seed, if you were into JD paperbacks, they were absolutely ESSENTIAL reading. I hold Martin responsible for getting me into collecting paperbacks. So, thanks Martin, I've enjoyed every minute of it!

So, thanks Martin, I've enjoyed every minute of it! Hi Lewis. it's the only copy of a JD zine i've seen but yes, i can see that Martin was doing a top job. Was hoping we'd entice him into the lurid pages of Paperback Fanatic/ Don't think there's been any Rumble-style JD in there yet, but certainly plenty of Richard Allen and NEL Hell's Angel paperbacks and magazines.

The first issue. I've also started posting up some of my books at Paperback Parade. Blogspot It seems a shame just to put them back on the shelf once I've read them and it's good to share the info. I'll have to check out Paperback Fanatic as well. Attachments:
