Another one from the free library: The mysterious world of Australian cinema! I saw an Australian film once. I think it was about a young man who went somewhere to be a schoolteacher. I think the twist was that a brother and sister that he got to know had an incestuous relationship. Can you identify the film? Might be Wake in Fright, aka Outback, though as I remember, among those the teacher gets mixed up are a married couple in an open relationship? It would be a brave director attempted to film Braddon's Inseparables.

Definitely Wake in Fright, one of my favourite flicks with a brilliant performance by the criminally underrated Donald Pleasence as the dissolute doc. What you might call Outback Noir.

Those are gorgeous. I'm frankly envious of how you keep coming across these treasures in the wild. Thank you as always for sharing them with us via these scans.
cheers, Hel.

Picked these up at the Vinnies shop for 3 bucks each: Didn't know this existed, a stapled 44 page booklet of three stories that didn't make it into Nocturnes: Couple of novelisations: And this nice Mike Ashley anthology - Nadelman's God is the TED KJlein story in it:

Ah, Willard. One of the few movies of the period I never seen. I can't see anything scary in rats - aside from the James Herbert variety - and when I see them in movies I just shrug. One of the dumbest movie cliché is the screaming because of rats. Grow up was the first thing which came to my mind. So the idea of a guy and his pet rodent didn't anything for me. But maybe I am wrong. Is this a forgotten masterpiece?
The Connolly looks like a real find. I always wonder at such prints. Weeks of work lands on the ground of the cutting room, they publish it just once and it can't generate additional income for a long time.

I think rats are cute and they make good pets. I see nothing scary about them either. The problem with Willard is that it was billed as a horror movie when really it's a character study of a lonely person and how that loneliness can drive one to extremes. I haven't seen the movie in years, but it's not because it's too scary -- it's too sad, and I just feel worse after watching it. It's well-acted and a really good movie, provided you don't mind being depressed afterwards. It reminds me of another movie that was billed as horror when really it's just a portrait of loneliness and resultant madness: Fade to Black starring Dennis Christopher.

Excellent comparison. Willard and Fade to Black are similarly-themed and were mismarketed. The rats are only scary in Willard because Willard uses them to exact revenge on people.

There is a sequal to Willard called Ben from 1972. The title track is the song Ben, sung by Michael Jackson. It was his first number one solo single. I wonder how many people who hear it know it is about a killer rat.
