Yet another stalwart of British TV and cinema is lost to us. As well as the obvious (Clegg and Wallace) he popped up in programmes that coloured many Vault inmates' formative years - Dr Who, The Persuaders, and the like - as well as in Amicus and Hammer horror movies. He was a truly brilliant voice actor though (When The Wind Blows and Ratty at the gates of dawn...) and a thoroughly great man - he offered to do the Wallace voiceover in return for a donation to his favourite charity. A great loss.

I was particularly fond of him as Gudgin, the caretaker, in The Ghosts of Motley Hall, and as ghost hunter, Milton Guest, in The Clifton House Mystery, but he really was one of those actors that was a welcome presence when he turned up, in everything from Catweazle to Mystery & Imagination: Sweeney Todd, The Pallisers to The Moonstone.
