It wasn't until I checked my copy of BMC 250 did I see that it included two articles by Richard Dalby. 250 was a "Horror Special".

I've just checked. BMC 328 was the last issue. damn, I didn't know about the article on E.F. Benson's ghost stories, which Richard Dalby only briefly covered in issue 18. I'll have to find a copy of 328.

I would be interested to find out who he listed as his Top 20 Horror Authors.

Dalby's list was a chronological one covering the period 1764 - 1939. You can probably guess who features on it as it is very much a case of the usual suspects. But here's the rogue's gallery in full: Horace Walpole, William Beckford, Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Gregory Lewis, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Robert Louis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Machen, H. G Wells, Richard Marsh, Bram Stoker, Arthur Conan Doyle, Algernon Blackwood, William Hope Hodgson, Gaston Leroux, Dennis Wheatley and H P Lovecraft.

Personally I'm gutted that there was no room for Clark Ashton Smith on the list. There's one name there that I'd happily substitute his for.

James, I've now ammended the lists to incorporate all that additional info which you so very kindly excavated from your own cardboard Well of Souls. Really can't thank you enough. Its a back breaking endeavour as I know only all too well. I did just pass on adding the "In The Salesroom" reports which Dalby compiled as these have always seemed to me like mere reportage copy rather than proper journalism. But if anyone feels strongly enough about it then I would encourage them to begin their own listing using your own pioneering efforts as a starting point.

This is a massive body of work. There are not many translations of his work, but some were rather successful, like Chillers for Christmas which over the years got a few new editions.

Did Dalby made his living as a writer or was this after hours work?

No problems, Cro - I just added anything I saw RD's name on. There may be a few omissions - like the Lackritz Crime Library pt 1; without going back to have a look it should be in #224.

I should also have those few unchecked issues from 200 onwards - I'll have a look.
