If anyone is interested, we just had an hour long interview on Radio Tees on the Bob Fischer Sits In show. It ran from 2pm to 3pm and should be on iPlayer radio soon. Did anyone yet recommend the joyous article by Bob Fischer in the new Fortean Times (354)? "The Haunted Generation: From children's TV to public information films, the 1970s were suffused with melancholy and disquiet. Bob Fisher discovers how Penda's Fen and the Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water inspired a generation to creativity and ponders the future of popular hauntology". I've just finished reading it and (although I pre-date the generation he discusses) I can totally identify. This FT has an article on Hookland too, so I reckon it's the best issue for months. Someone on the Fortean Times forum last Wednesday reported that the Bob Fischer article was discussed on the radio: "The Radcliffe and Maconie show on BBC 6 Music namechecked the FT and the hauntology article this afternoon, and it set off a programme-long discussion of scary stuff in vintage TV. This article has legs!". Both Stuart Maconie and Mark Radcliffe are gentlemen of good taste, and I know that Maconie in particular is a fan of the Ghost Story for Christmas M.R. James adaptations. I wonder if they were mentioned.

We've sent a copy of the book to Stuart Maconie so hopefully he'll enjoy that!

Everyone seems to have loved the article, and the letter from Albert Ravey, for me, hits the nail on the head.

It occurs to me that my just saying that there are some good '70s letters in the new Fortean Times isn't really helping people who don’t read the magazine, so here's a particularly apposite quote from Albert Ravey's letter (which I like not only because it mentions MRJ!):
"The past was still there, haunting the present and the future was going to be pretty weird too. Bob Fischer's interviewees were all in agreement about when all this ended - sometime in the early to mid-Eighties - but were less sure about when it began. I would argue that this was because it was all a continuation of what had been going on in our culture for centuries, with the spread of television adding another dimension. Think of all those M R James adaptations (in typical 1970s no-holds-barred style) that appeared at Christmas - and was there ever a writer more concerned with a nation's history haunting its present than James? Britain was a country with a living history and a big respect for the uncanny... Perhaps the stranger puzzle is why it ended. Richard Littler talks of the culture turning to money and that may be a big part of it. The conflicting voices of religion, history and science were all sidelined in favour of the dead whine of economics by 1985 and that has gone on to this day."
I admit the reality is less black and white, and more nuanced than that, but I think there's a fair bit of truth to what Mr Ravey says.

And unfortunately "the dead whine of economics" is becoming ever louder nowadays. Very sad.

Must be my pick for book of the year. I can't disagree with that. I'm still finding fascinating bits I'd missed first time (not having read it sequentially).

I shall pass on all of your kind words to Ste. We've been very pleased (and a little surprised) at the very positive response that the book has received.
