This really is exceptional work, Mr. Crom, more of an instant illustrated booklet than yer average forum thread. So rarely leave my horror/ supernatural/ football comfort zones these days but time was when the power of a glorious paperback cover turned my head to exploring the likes of Harry Patterson's The Graveyard Shift and Ellery Queen's The Blue Movie Murders (had a great time with both, btw). I still maintain that Gordon Williams' Siege Of Trenchers Farm is a horror novel (whereas somehow David Morrell's First Blood isn't). Didn't think much of the Williams/ Venables collaboration They Used To Play On Grass. In case its of any use, re bonus material. Arthur Williams' Being A Murderer Myself was another to appear in 'Alfred Hitchcock'/ Robert Athur's Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Stories They Wouldn't Let Me Do On TV alongside Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game and Ray Bradbury's The October Game.

Gratified you approve Dem. On reflection I believe the exercise was worth the effort. If for no other reason than the fact that the process of putting it together flagged up several errors that had embedded themselves into the original numerical listing. Name and number crunching on this scale invariably invites error of course, and so I'm sure that for every mistake that I've now rectified I've doubtless perpetuated others or created new ones entirely. It goes without saying that I'd be profoundly grateful for anyone pointing these out to me.
I hope anyone interested in researching and/or collecting the series will find it useful. I looked in vain for such a resource when I first became interested in the set and so know how beneficial I would have found it.
Incidentally, I've only made a point of identifying pseudonyms where the pseudonyms themselves feature as part of the contributors roster.
One closing observation which I think is worth making. Although, as mentioned previously, Harry Patterson was the champion contributor with twelve novels used, closely followed with ten apiece by James Hadley Chase, Andrew York and Dick Francis (poor DF, runner up again); in terms of duration of contribution no one can hold a candle to Michael Gilbert. His five novel haul spans a period of seventeen years with an incredible 155 volumes published between his first appearance in the series and his last. His only serious challenger in this context is Geoffrey Jenkins with 123 seperating the use of A TWIST OF SAND IN 1960 and A CLEFT OF STARS in 1975. Remarkable testaments to both men's period popularity, but who reads them now?
Greatly appreciate the additional information with regards to the Arthur Williams story. The bonus material listing has now been amended to reflect it. Cheers.

That was a splendid piece of work - the author index really bought home how popular some mid-list authors could be, in those days when there was such a thing. I hadn't twigged how many Michael Gilbert had contributed - an excellent writer, understated and never a front-runner. He only died a few years back, having gone into his '90's. I suspect the main reason he never attained greater success had nothing to do with the quality of the work, but more to do with the fact that he had few, if any, recurring central figures in his books. There's nothing like a series to get the writer's popularity and profile going, especially in these days of TV adaptation.
John Lange of 'Binary' was Michael Crichton, wasn't he? I read this when I was at secondary school, and loved it. I also loved 'The Andromeda Strain', but didn't figure it was the same man until reading it somewhere (unless the mind is playing tricks again). I could always open another window and google it, but I'm on a roll...
John Wainwright - read a couple and found them a bit stodgy for me. But lots of procedural detail, and I believe that was his secret as a long-time library fave. He was an ex-copper, a bit like Maurice Procter (though I prefer MP).
James Mills 'A Report To The Commissioner' - if it's the book I'm thinking of, I couldn't have told you the author but it was another pre-pubescent fave as it was written in the manner of an official document with interviews, memos, etc. Not that unique a form I suppose, but when you're about 12 and never seen anything like that before - wow!
Once again, a labour of love which is much appreciated by someone who is too bone idle to catalogue in such a manner, and has a kids first scooter he can't put off assembling any longer (it's the sprog's birthday at the weekend).

I could always open another window and google it, but I'm on a roll... Yes it was. I've just read a reissued version of Binary with MICHAEL CRICHTON in huge letters on the cover, above a tiddley 'writing as John Lange'. It was a '92 reprint but I couldn't resist the blurb on the back that mentioned a right-wing nutcase who wanted to 'make America great again'. Brilliant work CMM. I'm incredibly disappointed that Trevanian's first name was 'Brian' though.
