Chrissie Demant © 2016 Day thirteen brings a first VAC appearance for Andrew Darlington, former stand-up alt-commedian, sometime rock critic, veteran of the fanzine scene, and author of the recent genre-bending SF-horror-fantasy-weirdness collection, A Saucerful Of Secrets (Parallel Universe, 2016). Am sure you will agree that today's offering is as appropriate for the time of year as it is unspeakably ghastly. After all, what's Christmas without some good old stuffing?

There's something grimly fascinating about Taxidermy. Bravo, Mr Darlington.

Wow - Andy Darlington! No offence to Mr Campbell, but Mr D loomed large in my early sf/diy post-punk/poetry fanzine years, and to me he's a stellar name for the Vault to snag. And with a little beauty, too. (relatively speaking)

Chrissie Demant Day fourteen . Title suggests Franklin Marsh has yet to catch the festive mood, but fear not, today's terror treat centres around a funeral and, fair play to the mourners, they're nowt if not up for a knees up. Word is that Vault's resident sultan of the abominable has a follow up to last year's marvellous Auld Franklin's Almanak Of Doom in the works - am not ashamed to admit that I seriously cannot wait.

Deliciously grim little tale and its great to have Andrew on board.

You may or may not be interested to learn that the geography has changed yet again (the joys of creeping gentrification: part ... lost count). The municipal car park that did for Dorset Street, Millers Court & Co., has itself been demolished to make way for one of ex-Mayor Blowjo's final vanity projects. My research is only ever as up-to-date as Google Street View.

Well, after the most stressful few days I can remember in a long time I'll finally be able to dive back into the advent calendar stories. I've four to catch up with now. Should be back on track by Friday

The stories included thereafter remain the sole copyright of their authors and may not be reproduced without their prior consent. My research is only ever as up-to-date as Google Street View. John, the demolition work began some months after you'd written the story. We can only hope the ghosts of Whites Row and environs haunt the new luxury premises something appalling.

Day fifteen: An icy winter's morning, hunched in the bus shelter. What you need is a swig of Old Methuselah to warm your bones. David A. Riley, who along with wife Linden runs the extraordinarily productive Parallel Universe Publications, has been active on the horror 'scene' since the late nineteen-sixties when he began contributing to David A. Sutton's legendary Shadow fanzine and cracked Herbert Van Thal's Pan Book Of Horror Stories with The Lurkers In The Abyss, revived by John Pelan in The Century's Best Horror Fiction (Cemetery Dance, 2012) as the most notable story of 1970. Today's account of a tragic incident post-Zombie Apocalypse first appeared in Charlie Black's Seventh Black Book Of Horror (Mortbury Press, 2010) and, most recently, the collection Their Cramped Dark World (PUP 2015). Another cracker from Franklin. That one made me squirm; really nasty and disturbing. Well done, FM.

If you're up for further punishment, and have not recently explored the sealed section, try FM's sadistically seasonal contribution to the Cthulhu Mythos, Christmas - A Time For Family (you'll need to be logged in).

Thanks for the comments, Rip. I normally muck about but that story is one of the few actual horror ones I consider I've thrown down. Big thanks to Chrissie for the boffo illustration too, and Dem for the plugs. I enjoyed Romero's Children via the 7th Black Of Horror. A very interesting take on an otherwise familiar genre, and realistically American as well.

Johnny Mains Day sixteen. Even in death, a fast-food casualty has cause to be grateful to the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. I love you, you big dummy.Writing in the author's notes at back of his most recent collection, A Little Light Screaming (PUP, 2015). Johnny Mains describes today's offering as "Possibly my most ambitious story to date, it's also my most perverted." For my two bob's worth, it's among his finest. We are doubly grateful to Mr. M. for providing a painting by his own hand - and at very short notice - by way of illustration. Attachments:Resuscitation andy.pdf (143.15 KB)
