Day twenty-four continued. Ha! They think it's all over, safe for another year .... but this is Vault - you don't get off that lightly. Photographer unknown * (Thank you, whover you are) Bride of Dem has retired until nightfall, Marion Bondage is still detained under the obscene publications act, and I couldn't find a photograph of an astronaut anywhere on the internet. Don't know how, when or why this photo wound up on my hard drive , but, it seems strangely appropriate to the occasion .... the first "publication" of a snappy sci-horror hybrid by the hand of our enigmatic friend and colleague, JoJo Lapin X.

Very good JoJo. I liked it too. It put me in mind of a 2014 movie called Space Station 76. It has Liv Tyler in it!

Day twenty-four. File under Ichor Of The Squamous Ones. Final word goes to Charles Black, the magus of Mortbury, whose Black Book anthologies introduced me to so many of the authors featured on this and previous calendars. This short-short was written in response to a Twitter competition run by Innsmouth Free Press in 2010. Can you guess where it came out of all the entries? That really is your lot! A sincere THANK YOU to all the contributors, and to those who commented on their efforts! Will add a full listing over holiday for anybody playing catch-up. And remember These stories were designed to inflict distress and suffering throughout the seasons. Attachments:The Last Tweet.pdf (55.29 KB)

Sterling work curating this year's advent calendar, Dem. A really enjoyable selection.

Wonderfully chilling story from Paul Finch and well up to his usual high standard. One can imagine what was in store for Brenda and probably Josie at the end--very nasty.
Spaceman had a nice build-up to a good surprise ending. Well done Jojo.
The Last Tweat made me chuckle and was, I thought, an appropriately modern way of concluding this year's calendar.
Thank you to the authors and illustrators for generously providing their work and giving so much pleasure over the past 24 days. A special mention and thanks to Chrissie for her wonderfully evocative creations and, of course, to Dem for putting it all together so brilliantly. As usual, his introductions to the stories have been both delightfully entertaining and informative, and I have, once again, learned of authors and collections of which I was previously unaware, giving me new avenues to explore in the new year.

Terrific blaze of glory finish, with Mr Finch providing the quality and atmosphere, Monsieur Lapin the laffs and Chas the
Brilliant stuff Dem and Chrissie, and all contributors. Will essay the old ones (ho ho) when possible.

December 2016 was an insane month for me, due to circumstances not appropriate to discuss in these hallowed, cobwebbed halls. Today I found I had left both my current book and my electronic reader at home, so I decided to start in on some of the many excellent stories stashed away here. Sheer delight.
Bassett Morgan never disappoints. Reading a passage such as this:
No white man can fight Papua. The land gets under his skull and behind his eyes. It drugs and stultifies his morale and finally kills his soul. ...
Or this--
Mansey knew the meaning of the drum-song of Papua, rising, falling, sinister, maddening, the voice coaxed by bare hands from bladder-skins stretched over human skulls, and a new fear swooped and rode on his shoulders. That drum-song meant savages on the march, and it was coming nearer.
--I get that wonderful old Vault of Evil feeling. Lovely to have a lift from some old-fashioned horror in the midst of this sink of depravity in which I exist.
And those passages are rather restrained for the lady, given what follows...
cheers, H.
