Chrissie Demant Usually we hold back on Vault's very own Mr. Christmas until nearer the BIG DAY, but the enforced joviality brigade have been so insufferable, so early this year, some of us are already nearly dead with the joy of it all. Time for Craig Herbertson to administer a dose of life-affirming festive gloom! The following Bellport High Old Fellows tale, written especially for this Calendar, builds around lifelong chums settling down to a friendly chess match. Surely little potential for unpleasantness in that scenario .....? I think the great Shadowpunk himself, Charles L. Grant, would have approved of All In The Game. Craig's most recent anthology appearances include Kitchen Sink Gothic, and Terror Tales of The Scottish Highlands. For further dark adventures of Bellport's finest, you should seek out the recent paperback edition of the sensational The Heaven Maker & Other Gruesome Tales from Parallel Universe publications. And don't miss The Death Tableau!

Thoroughly enjoying these tales so far. Excellent stuff. Unfortunately my Father has been taken into hospital (on Tuesday) with appendicitous (or however you spell it) and so have spent a lot of time up there recently. He had the operation yesterday but it's not too clever for a 77 year old man and even worse when last night his blood refused to clot and he started to bleed into his stomach. Anyway, enough of my problems. Just wanted to say that I'm downloading these to my Ipad and they are keeping me amused whilst I sit in intensive care watching people die around me. Keep up the good work!

Nice one. Reminiscent of Roald Dahl's TotU.

Yuki Hayashi, by Chrissie DemantDay thirteen can only mean the divine Thana Niveau, Sister Hyde to Lord Probert's Dr. Jekyll, who first came to our attention in 2009 when her first published fiction, a grisly Jack the Ripper fantasy, won the Whitechapel 1888 Society's annual short story competition. Within three years Grey Friar Press had published Thana's stunning first collection, From Hell To Eternity, and the prestigious anthology appearances have continued apace with contributions to, amongst others, several Black Books Of Horror, two Terror Tales, Thirteen Ghosts of Christmas, Horror Uncut!, Zombie Apocalypse: Endgame, The Burning Circus, Death Rattles, and many a Year's Best selection. It is to be hoped that The Needing, "a haunted house novel" currently seeking a publisher will be with us sooner rather than later. Today's story first appeared in Charles Black's Tenth Black Book of Horror, to be swiftly reprinted in Stephen Jones' Best New Horror 25. As "sweet and romantic" ghost stories go, this tale of a tiny Japanese torture porn starlet and a reluctant devotee of her work, surely ranks among the least comfortable. If Alex is a creepy voyeur what does that make the reader? You can stalk Thana via her official, regularly updated site, HERE. Attachments:Guinea Pig Girl.pdf (164.75 KB)

What a wonderful story 'All in the Game' is. I'm a great one for games of strategy myself, chess included, although I'm useless at them all I still enjoy all the cut and thrust of them all. Fantastic.

Phew! Today's was very intense. I'm more of a supernatural/creepy atmosphere/weird creatures kind of horror lover really, but that was very well done. And for good or bad, my minds eye found the imagery very easy to conjure up. Sweet dreams

Guinea Pig Girl is disgusting and skin-crawlingly awful. The kind of story that makes you worry about the future of society. Is this the kind of filth and depravity that led to the fall of the Roman Empire?
I assume there's more where this came from? And when I say 'assume', I mean 'hope'.

Some delightfully nasty stuff so far with our modern writers' tales. Craig, Thana and John can always be relied upon to set the flesh a-shuddering.

Day fourteen, and we welcome "Lover of the lurid" Mr. John Forth to the Calendar, with a spooky short concerning the final public performance of a showbiz psychic medium. John's published stories to date include A Song, A Silence ( Ninth Black Book Of Horror), the fantastically disgusting Molli & Julli ( Eleventh Black Book Of Horror), A Simple Matter Of Space, (Joel Lane & Tom Johnstone's Horror Uncut!), The Green Clearing (Simon Marshall-Jones' The 13 Ghosts Of Christmas) and Mary Kelly's Face ( Nightscapes: Vol. 1. Not read. Would not be the least surprised if it's really horrible). John tells us that, four or so years ago, Goodbye, Ghosts was accepted by a certain publisher for an anthology that never appeared. Poor Mr. Strang! He has no luck whatsoever ....
