There is a call for submissions for The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows Volume Three on the Sarob Press website: www.sarobpress.blogspot.co.ukThe Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows Volume Two was just as successful as volume one, so we have agreed to go ahead with a third volume to complete the sequence and include prequels and sequels to some (hopefully all) of those M.R. James stories which were not covered in the first two collections. The deadline for submissions to the third Book of Shadows is 31 December 2015. Send them to Rosemary Pardoe (dandrpardoe@gmail.com) preferably in the form of a Word or RichText e-mail attachment, or in the body of an e-mail (or on a CD-ROM: snail mail address on request). The current plan is for the book to be published around the middle(ish) of 2016. Here is the full list of remaining stories for you to take your pick from: “Lost Hearts” (prequels only) “The Ash-tree” “Number 13” “The Rose Garden” “The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral” “Martin’s Close” “An Episode of Cathedral History” “A View from a Hill” “A Warning to the Curious” “An Evening’s Entertainment” “There was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard” “The Fenstanton Witch” The third G&S Book of Shadows is still open for sequels/prequels .... but you'll have to be quick, as Rosemary Pardoe, writing in October's The Ghosts & Scholars M. R. James Newsletter #28 informs. ".... the (theoretical) deadline .... is December 31st, although it's looking like I'll have to stop accepting stories well before that. I've accepted about three-quarters of the content so far, with contributions from some of the authors who featured in volumes one and/ or two, and some new names to the series. Both the quality and the range of submissions are satisfyingly high again. As with the previous books, it'll be published by Robert Morgan's Sarob Press, the planned date being some time around late summer 2016 (possibly with a final Haunted Library booklet mopping up the remaining MRJ stories at a later date, so don't worry too much if you miss the cut-off for the book). * Thanks to Michael for doing all the heavy spadework.

It's interesting to see that some of M.R. James's best (and therefore most popular?) stories remain among the twelve to be sequelised or prequelised. As for my "heavy spadework" I just copied the information from the Sarob Press website! Still saves somebody else a job, and thank you for initially bringing our attention to the request for submissions. Will there be any participation from Vault people in the new one?

Oh yes - I have a story in there called TEMPUS EDAX RERUM, which is my SF interpretation of what was really going on in NUMBER 13!

We're still both cranking 'em out - Mrs Probert being the high-class half of the act, and me with dungeon temples full of giant frog god-worshipping scantily clad lovelies.

Never a dull moment at Probert Towers. Any news of the ZA spin-off novel's publication date? Will it still be a Robinson title?

Still languishing in the files of Steve Jones as far as I'm aware. I haven't prodded him too much because I've been very busy on other books, hopefully some of which will see the light of day soon (ish)...

I haven't prodded him too much because I've been very busy on other books, hopefully some of which will see the light of day soon (ish)... After finishing the sprawling, often magnificent Zombie Apocalypse - Endgame, I figured that was it for me and the walking dead for a while as they are now reaching the dangerous level of over-exposure that ultimately did for bloody V*mp*res, but I liked Mark Morris's ZA spin-off, and am disgustingly looking forward to yours. Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows. I'm really not up on this stuff, but has there been any talk of paperback editions of Volumes 1 & 2? The hard-covers tend to sell out FAST (as in pre-publication?) and not all of us are that quick on the draw.

Surely a compilation paperback of all three books must be tempting to SOME publisher? Thanks for the enthusiasm for my ZA! novel - I've certainly done my best to fill it with blood, worms, giant insects and all kinds of other Vault favourites. If they survive the editing process.

Having just read the artist formerly known as Lurkio's review of The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows Volume 2 in G&S MT James Newsletter #27, I'd say it was a matter of some urgency this material were made available to a wider public!

Daniel McGachey's suggestion (in above mentioned review) is still more ambitious, essentially a Mammoth Book of M. R. James.
"Should any potential third volume provide companion pieces [prequels/ sequels] to the remaining MRJ tales, Sarob might consider a bumper third compilation which places the master's stories grouped alongside those they have inspired."

While it is a shame that many books are only ever available as relatively expensive limited edition hardbacks, some prime items from the James List (of authors influenced by M.R. James) are available as paperback on Amazon etc. R.H. Malden, NINE GHOSTS (Benediction Classics). L.T.C. Rolt, SLEEP NO MORE (The History Press). Eleanor Scott, RANDALLS ROUND (The Oleander Press). ANCIENT HAUNTS (Coachwhip Publications) is an omnibus of E.G. Swain's THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES and Arthur Gray's TEDIOUS BRIEF TALES OF GRANTA AND GRAMARYE.

Hi Michael. Which other Jamesian (or of Jamesian interest) titles would you most like to see reprinted?

Which other Jamesian (or of Jamesian interest) titles would you most like to see reprinted? I'd need time to think about that. As many good Jamesian short stories have been written or collected since 1987, what I would most want to see is a new anthology on the lines of Richard Dalby and Rosemary Pardoe's Ghosts and Scholars: Ghost Stories In The Tradition Of M. R. James (Crucible, 1987). I would certainly include Edmund Crispin's "St. Bartholomew's Day", which hasn't been reprinted since The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories 2 (Robinson 1991). Which stories would anyone else like to include?
