I've only relatively recently read any of his writing but his novel 'The Grin of the Dark' really impressed me, in fact it's currently holding the title of best novel I've ever read. I've not read nearly enough of Ramsey to really give you a definitive personal judgement though I'm afraid.

Shakespeare is better. Takes a broader view of the human condition.

I’m not sure if this answers your question, but I’ve certainly found Ramsey to be the most consistently frightening practitioner in the field. I remember sitting down to read Dark Companions back when it was issued by Fontana in paperback and becoming quickly absorbed by the book. After reading about half of it, I found myself so completely unnerved that I had to go out and wander around for a bit amongst actual people simply to recover my composure. I’m not sure what an overdose of horror fiction might do to a person (or how it would be treated on the NHS!), but I felt as if I’d come close to one on that day. No writer since has even come close to creeping me out to that extent. Similarly, I found that the most recent story of Ramsey’s that I’ve read, ‘Speaking Still’ in the New Fears anthology, stayed with me for days afterward; a thoroughly disquieting tale. Long may his pen bleed!

Reading END OF A SUMMER'S DAY made me feel mentally ill. I get the same level of weirdness from Aickman but he's not as consistent as Campbell.

Reading END OF A SUMMER'S DAY made me feel mentally ill. I offer two quite different reactions to this; you may choose whichever one pleases you. 1. It is a wonderful feeling! 2. Surely this cannot be good.
